19-1 regular season earns top seed for St. Elizabeth in DIAA Boys Basketball Tournament

St. Elizabeth, the only one-loss team in the state, earned the top seed when the 24-team bracket for the DIAA Boys Basketball Tournament was released on Friday.

The Vikings (19-1) won their first 18 games before losing 58-51 to Sanford on Feb. 16.

St. Elizabeth recovered to finish the regular season on Feb. 20 with a 74-63 win at Middletown, which earned the No. 3 seed. Both teams are among the eight to earn first-round byes.

The tournament will begin Tuesday with eight first-round games, all starting at 7 p.m. on the home courts of the higher-seeded teams.

Then the top eight seeds will play host to second-round games at 7 p.m. Thursday, with St. Elizabeth meeting the Mount Pleasant-Odessa winner.

The quarterfinals will be held Saturday, March 2, at sites and times to be determined.

The action will move to the Carpenter Center for the semifinals on Thursday, March 7, with the first game set for 6:30 p.m. and the second game at 8.

Then Delaware’s high school basketball season wraps up with a championship tripleheader on Saturday, March 9, at the Carpenter Center.

The DIAA Unified Basketball final will tip off at noon, followed by the girls final at 2. Then the arena will be cleared and a separate ticket will be required for the boys championship game at 6.
