Orioles place 2B Schoop (oblique) on DL, recall RHP Cobb
The Baltimore Orioles have placed second baseman Jonathan Schoop on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain, the team announced Saturday.
Right-hander Alex Cobb was recalled from Double-A Bowie in a corresponding move and will start against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in his Orioles debut.
Schoop was injured on a swing in his final at-bat in the seventh inning during Baltimore's 7-3 loss to Boston on Friday. He exited the contest in the eighth inning after going 2-for-4 to improve his season average to .230 and received an MRI exam on Saturday morning.
The 26-year-old has one home run and three RBIs in 14 games this season after hitting 32 homers and driving in 105 runs in his first All-Star campaign last year.
Usual third baseman Tim Beckham will shift over to play second base Saturday, with Danny Valencia getting the start at the hot corner.
Cobb signed with the O's as a free agent on a four-year deal in late March. With the timing of the contract, he was left off the Orioles' season-opening roster in order to further prep for the season.
Cobb pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out eight, in an extended spring training game against the Minnesota Twins last Monday. He threw 93 pitches.
The 30-year-old established a career-best for victories when he went 12-10 with a 3.66 ERA for the Tampa Bay Rays last season. Cobb missed the entire 2015 season and most of the 2016 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
