Chiefs reject Dolphins' offer for Green
The NFL draft came and went without quarterback Trent Green being traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Miami Dolphins. It's becoming increasingly clear that the Chiefs might get little or nothing for their deposed starter.
The Dolphins offered Kansas City a sixth-round pick for Green this weekend, but Chiefs president Carl Peterson declined the offer, according to Green's agent Jim Steiner. The Chiefs have consistently sought a second-round pick in return for Green, who could ultimately be released.
"We'll address it in the next few days and see if we can get something resolved," said Steiner, who had worked out a new contract with the Dolphins contingent on the trade. "At this point, I don't know what the Chiefs are going to get for him from the Dolphins. I don't know how they get anything."
The Chiefs granted permission to Green to seek a trade in February after telling him that he would have to take a pay cut to stay and also compete for the starting job with second-year man Brodie Croyle.
Miami, on the other hand, has been in limbo at quarterback for quite some time. Daunte Culpepper, acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason, missed the final 12 games of 2006. He's still recovering from a right knee injury that ended his '05-06 season.
The Dolphins publicly expressed interest in Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn before the draft, but then passed on him when he dropped to them at No. 9 on Saturday. They instead took Ohio State wide receiver and returner Ted Ginn Jr.
Green, limited to eight games last season after suffering a concussion in the opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, has been drawn to Miami in part by his relationship with Cam Cameron. The first-year Dolphins coach worked with Green with the Washington Redskins in 1996-97.
