Ravens' Pitta to miss preseason with hand injury

Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta is expected to miss the entire preseason with what is believed to be a broken hand that may require surgery, the Carroll County Times reported.

Head coach John Harbaugh told the paper he hopes to have Pitta back for the team's September 10 season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pitta is scheduled to have an MRI to determine the extent of the damage.

Pitta technically is the No. 2 tight end behind Ed Dickson, but the Ravens frequently use two-tight end formations, and the Ravens don't have much depth at the tight end position. They may sign a veteran free agent to take Pitta's place for the preseason.

Pitta started two games last season, and he caught 40 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns in 2011.
