Notre Dame extends Kelly's contract

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly agreed to a contract extension through the 2017 season, the school announced Saturday.

The new deal replaces a contract that ran through the 2016 season. No financial terms were announced.

The 51-year-old Kelly led Notre Dame to the BCS national championship game last season. Before taking over as the Fighting Irish coach, Kelly was head coach at Cincinnati and Division II Grand Valley State.

Notre Dame opened the 2013 season on Saturday with a 28-6 victory over Temple, boosting Kelly's record with the Irish to 29-11 in his fourth year.
