Julio Urias finally earns first win a month after MLB debut

Welcome to The Walk Off, the nightly MLB recap from Big League Stew. Here we’ll look the top performers of the night, show you a must-see highlight and rundown the scoreboard. First, we start with

On a night when the No. 1 prospect in baseball made his major league debut for the Washington Nationals, another ballyhooed young pitcher finally earned the first win of his career for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Julio Urias made his MLB debut for the Dodgers earlier this season with the same hype Lucas Giolito experienced Tuesday. Giolito pitched well for Washington through four innings but didn’t return to the mound after a rain delay. He left with a 1-0 lead over the New York Mets and the Nationals went on to win 5-0.

Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, Urias gave up two earned runs in six innings with six walks and six strikeouts in a 6-5 Dodgers win. His outing was even more of an adventure than that line suggests. He picked off Jonathan Villar at first base in the first inning, but an official review led to a safe call by the umpires. As soon as play resumed, Urias picked off Villar a second time and this one did not require a review.

He received plenty of run support from his teammates and helped himself by driving in a run with his first major league hit to center field in the fourth inning.

It was the seventh start of Urias’ young career and the first time he has pitched six full innings before the call to the bullpen. Urias had a 27-game scoreless streak and a 1.10 ERA in seven starts in the minor leagues this season before he was called up.

Those numbers contributed to big expectations that he hasn’t been able to meet so far, but earning his first victory Tuesday was a step in the right direction and a positive building block for a guy who still has a ton of talent.

TOP PERFORMERS

Kris Bryant: One day after collecting 16 total bases in an historic hitting performance against the Reds, Chicago’s versatile second-year slugger came through with the go-ahead RBI in the 15th inning singling to left field to drive in Ben Zobrist and give Chicago a 7-2 win. Javier Baez later followed up with a Grand Slam

Carlos Correa: He went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI leading the Astros to a 7-1 win over the Angels. He also made a leaping grab of a line drive in the second inning to rob Gregorio Petit of a hit.

Brian Dozier: Brian Dozier homered in his third straight game and then hit another for good measure. He has a 10-game-hitting streak for Minnesota, turning around what had been a lackluster season for him.

Travis Shaw: The Red Sox third baseman went 3-for-5 with a single, double and a home run and drove in five runs to power Boston over Tampa Bay and struggling starter Chris Archer.

Brandon Crawford: San Francisco’s shortstop went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs in a 13-11 loss to Oakland. He doubled and tripled but struck out swinging to end the game as the Giants attempted to rally in the ninth inning.

MUST-SEE HIGHLIGHT

Carlos Santana ripped a single to right field to drive in the go-ahead run for Cleveland in the ninth inning Tuesday at Atlanta. Santana’s hit started a three-run inning for the Braves and eventually led to Cleveland winning its 11th straight game. It is the longest winning streak for the Indians in 34 years. Corey Kluber earned the win for the Indians pitching eight innings and giving up just three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts.

THE REST OF THE SCOREBOARD

Nationals 5, Mets 0: Lucas Giolito didn’t get a chance to earn his first win thanks to a rain delay that prevented him from returning to the mound after four strong innings. Bryce Harper hit his 16th home run of the season.

Cardinals 8, Royals 4: Seven Cardinals drove in at least one run and Michael Wacha earned his fourth win of the season with a so-so six-inning effort.

Rangers 7, Yankees 1: Cole Hamels pitched seven shutout innings and struck out seven to lead Texas to its 12th win in the past 14 games.

Tigers 7, Marlins 5: Miguel Cabrera, Jose Iglesias and Nick Castellanos homered in a seven-run fifth inning for Detroit. Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer for Miami.

Phillies 4, Diamondbacks 3: Philadelphia scored two runs in the top of the ninth, including one when Ryan Howard walked with the bases loaded to earn a come-from-behind win.

Mariners 5, Pirates 2: Nelson Cruz hit his 20th home run of the season and is the only MLB player to hit at least 20 homers in each season since 2009.

Orioles 11, Padres 7: Baltimore has hit 54 home runs in June, including one each from Adam Jones, Hyun Soo Kim and Chris Davis in this one.
