Jets promote Tony Sparano Jr, hire former safety Eric Smith

The New York Jets promoted Tony Sparano Jr. from intern to offensive assistant.

He's the son of former Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano.

Sparano, 27, played defensive end at Albany before coaching for the UFL's Hartford Colonials and was an offensive quality control coach with the Miami Dolphins when his father was head coach.

Eric Smith was hired as an intern. He's a retired former Jets safety and third-round draft pick, who had six interceptions and 3.5 sacks in 36 career starts and 96 games.
