Roger Federer's new style looks a lot like Tiger Woods' old style

Yesterday in Manhattan, Roger Federer debuted his new afternoon wardrobe for next week's U.S. Open. The six-time defending champion will wear a red shirt with black collar and trim along with black shorts for all of his afternoon matches at Flushing Meadow. (At night he'll reverse the colors.)

It's a good look for usually-understated Federer, much better at least than that garish blue he wore while winning the French Open. But the red/black combo seems familiar. Really familiar. I can't quite put my finger on it, but ...

... oh, right. He looks exactly like Tiger Woods has looked every Sunday since 1997.

Copy or not, we think it looks fantastic. Federer could stand to be a little more bold on the court, particularly given that Rafael Nadal often wears blinding colors that make him look like a cross between a traffic signal and the leader of the Tour de France . Federer won't go that far, but a nice, fierce red is a solid statement from him.

Plus, seeing as how Tiger and Roger are friends who often watch each other play and send text messages during big events, it makes sense for Federer to rock his buddy's style? (Although, couldn't one argue that it should be Tiger who mimics Federer? After all, R-Fed has 15 Grand Slam tennis titles to Tiger's 14 in golf.)

In an interview with CNBC's Darren Rovell, Federer answered questions about his friend Tiger, but made no mention of the similarities in their wardrobes. Is it a secret? Or did Anna Wintour just tell Roger to keep that on the hush-hush?
