Four times Barcelona have played Atletico Madrid this season and four times they have not won. Though Barca won the Spanish Super Cup on on an away goal, each match has been a draw, the most recent being the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, which ended 1-1 with Atletico getting the valuable away goal this time.
It probably should have been Barcelona's best chance to break the streak. It was at the Camp Nou and Atletico's top scorer, Diego Costa, nearly didn't start due to a groin injury. He ended up having to be subbed off in just the 30th minute with a thigh problem, but instead of putting Atletico at a disadvantage, it merely allowed them to bring on another Diego. And this Diego opened the night's scoring in the 56th minute with a thunderous shot...
Andres Iniesta and Neymar connected to produce an equalizer in the 71st minute, but yet again Barcelona could not win. Just when they thought one Diego was neutralized, another Diego jumped up and hurt them. In defense, there's also Diego Godin and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who has not allowed Messi to score all season. His name is not Diego, but rumor has it the clown who performed at his third birthday party was. And harnessing the power of all of these Diegos on the pitch? Manager DIEGO SIMEONE.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have no Diegos.
Clearly this is more than just a coincidence. Men named Diego the world over have conspired to create a team that can fight against Barcelona. Now if Atletico can just acquire Diego Milito before the second leg in Madrid, there will be no stopping them.
