Minnesota Wild trade Marek Zidlicky to Devils, actually get something of value for him

134271038Defenseman Marek Zidlicky was done with the Minnesota Wild, after a fundamental disagreement with coach Mike Yeo about his role and public statements of frustration to the media. The Wild's options were limited, too, as Zidlicky had a no-trade clause. When he moved, it wasn't expected to be for much.

Yet GM Chuck Fletcher managed to get forwards Nick Palmieri and Stephane Veilleux, defenseman Kurtis Foster, a second round pick in 2013 and a conditional third round pick in 2013 from the New Jersey Devils for Zidlicky on Friday night.

Foster and Veilleux are both former Minnesota players. Foster spent four seasons with the Wild from 2005 to 2009; Veilleux played 361 games over six seasons in Minnesota. They're both unrestricted free agents at the end of the season, although Foster's booming shot on the point would be tantalized to retain for the right price.

To get a player like Palmieri back for Zidlicky is, at face, hockey voodoo. He's an RFA, but he's a young forward with potential that simply played his way out of a gig with the Devils. As Pete DeBoer said last month: "This was a guy I pretty handed a top-six forward job to off the bat and he slowly worked himself out of that."

So it's not as if the Devils were fleeced here or anything; it's two UFAs, a spare part forward and a second-rounder, basically, which is still a coup for Fletcher considering the circumstances.

(Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports that the Wild get conditional 3rd rounder pick in '13 if the Devils make East Final in 2012 and Zidlicky plays 75 percent of their games in the 1st two rounds of the playoffs.)

Question is whether Zidlicky's a worthwhile addition.

We broke down the acquisition last week when it was first reported Zidlicky would waive his NTC for the Devils:

Zidlicky is 35 and has one more year on his deal at a $4 million cap hit. The Devils do have Foster ($1.8 million) and Bryce Salvador ($2.9 million) off the cap in the summer, so it's a bit of a wash; especially with Adam Larsson and Mark Fayne (who is an RFA) returning as cheap labor.

(And hey, who cares: It's the NHL's money anyway!)

For the Devils, this right out of the Lou Lamoriello playbook: Acquiring a veteran, puck-moving defenseman for a playoff run (see also: Shawn Chambers in 1995, Vladimir Malakhov in 2000). Zidlicky costs more than some alternatives like ex-Devil Johnny Oduya, headed to free agency with the Winnipeg Jets. But if he finds his game, he's an asset.

Which is a big "if" at 35 years old. Zidlicky was at a philosophical impasse with Coach Mike Yeo, and that damaged relationship led to this apparent parting of ways. Now the only question is if a player who didn't feel his style matched the expectations of his previous coach and team will drink Lou's Kool-Aid and play Devils hockey.

Well, not the only question. There's also whether Zidlicky will continue to be a ineffective turnover machine, or if that was a product of his unhappiness with the Wild.

Wonder what else Lamoriello will add to the roster in the Zach Parise Farewell Tour '12 ...

as a ranger fan been saying all season long devils are a very scary team. they don't give up shots, they have an amazing pk, they have arguably(with the sedins) the best first line in nhl, they have a second line of elias quietly at a point per game and clarksson in mid 20s in goals... and the power play is just picking up pace. on paper they should have an elite power play. a guy like zidlicky can make it click like foster was supposed to, foster is more of a booming shot kind of guy on a pp that has enough shooters, zidlicky is a better puck mover... i think he smooths out the pp and devils will be a good deal more dangerous. I think they will see the rangers in the conference finals and give minn that 3rd rounder. they are better than the flyers and pittsburgh, quietly.

and bruins right now while bruins are giving up all these goals... devils are 2nd in the conference in points by a decent margin over past 2 months

I never thought I would say this to a Rangers fan but good post!

@Brian - this is the 2nd time in a week I've had to give a Rangers fan props. I have 110% respect for a fan of ANY team that is also a fan of the game. Rangers fans on this board, for the most, tend to be raging homers. Scott shatters that stereotype, thank you! There IS hope for mankind!! ;)

Seriously, I hope Zidlicky fits in and finds his game...while this isn't a blockbuster deal of any proportion, it could definitely be the nudge needed to get the Devils over the hump. Getting a couple of injured starters back would be nice, too.

wysh what is with your constant negativity regarding Parise sticking around for next season?
      • BFarva 2 months ago
I think Wysh just doesn't want to jinx it...I have faith in Devs keeping Zach but I'm the same way

The team is pushing the cap. Their owner is broke. They are likely looking at being forced into new ownership next season when their current owner fails to trick someone else into giving him hundreds of millions of dollars to run the team. Their Hall of Fame goalie is about to retire and they have no suitable replacement. Pick your reason.
      • Dave 2 months ago
They are not at the cap, the owner is not going broke, nor are they being forced into a new ownership. The Devils have 3 young goalies in their system and JV already has a new investor to purchase the minority of the team. So basically you are 100% wrong.... But I appreciate the effort.

I own Zidlicky on my fantasy team and I hope he goes back to putting up some huge point totals with the Devils.
      • Mit 2 months ago
Huge points with the Devils? Not likely. Who has ever put up huge points with the Devils?
      • J.J. R 2 months ago
What league are you in that Zidlicky is a fantasy option? 14 pts, -6, 24 PIM and 34 HITS? there are a lot better options then this guy! Are you in last place?

^ I couldn't agree more. Why would you have still have a guy that's a healthy scratch for most games and is putting up the #'s he is. I hear Martin Skoula is still avalible on waivers.

Wysh, stop being so pessimistic about Parise re-signing. Zidlicky will bad-mouth Minnesota for the next 2 months; that must have some effect. Are there any disgruntled Red Wings?
      • Jake 2 months ago
Parise is from Minnesota, he bought a new house there in December. Zidlicky can bad mouth all he wants, it won't affect a thing.

good trade for the devils , NJ needs an experienced defencemen for the playoffs plus an offense dman on the Powerplay.
good pickup and the devils really gave up a handful of minor leaguers for him.
The Devils really need to sign Parise, and sign Henrique to be a top tier tieam and even trade for a goalie!

I love how birdbrained writers love to assume they know what's going to happen. How many clueless simpletons said Kovy was just a rental? Parise will be back in NJ next year and for many years to come. Never discount what the best GM in all of sports can do.

Zack farewell tour, huh? Now that is a story.
Please let me know when it's fact.

Foster = Terrible on defense. ATROCIOUS. He has cost NJ far more goals than he has helped produce.
      Veilleux = Career AHLer
Palmieri = Peaked last year during the Devils' late season run, has gotten worse and worse under DeBoer
Conditional 3rd round pick = conditions will never be met, Devils won't make the conference finals

The Devils got Zidlicky for a 2nd rounder.

The "Wild" have less need in 2012/13 when Parise comes home to Minnesota. Concentrate on some drafts and young defense. Pieces you can put around Zach. Wild will be much improved now. Adding by subraction here. Zidlicky is a cancer and needed to go. Pieces back are fine. Cap room even finer.

Every time I look at this trade I wonder how Fletcher could possibly have swooned this out of New Jersey. SO much goodness for the Wild in this one. Next season the Wild will be a playoff team, the year after they will be a contender for the conference. This just helps solidify that. Deadline deal in 2014, this second-round pick (a prospect by then) will be traded to someone (maybe back to New Jersey?) for the missing piece to our playoff run.

Why do you always say Parise is not going to be signed? ZP and the Devs are heating up ! have some faith, your negativity sux

As a Minnesotan good riddance to Zidlicky. He was more of a liability than a producer during his time with the Wild. Of course, the Wild now have no "offensive" defensemen and few offensive forwards for that matter. The future looks bright, this year not so much.

Zids has 14 pts in 41 games (no goals) for $4m/year, and was a locker room pariah. The Wild get at least one pick, a promising young forward, and the cap freedom to compete for a good player or two in free agency this summer (Foster and Veilleux aren't really the big gains by the Wild in this deal).

I don't see how the Wild lose anything on this one.
    • Old Nurse  •  2 months ago
Maybe there is a reverse fleece for Parise to go to Minnesota to even out the trade.

Lou unloaded salary of marginal players, aquired a player who did not play in Mini.....Zidlicky has good friends on the Devils and coupled with the fact that Larry Robinson handles the D-men it should inspire and rejuvinate...good move for both teams, Ya gotta give to get ,Lou is an honest guy who makes moves to help is team year after year. PS Zack will be Back in NJ for a loooong time!

its not the NHL's money, they only advanced the Devils money that they would already have earned anyway. Its been done many times before, and its not that out of the ordinary. Get you facts right instead of reading a tabloid paper like the NY Post
    • Robert  •  2 months ago
wild got more for Zid than they gave Nashville for him a few years ago.(ryan jones+a 2nd rd pick). hard to say the wild lost in this deal.
