Texas QB David Ash says he has no regrets about career cut short

David Ash’s career came to an unfortunate and premature end after the concussion symptoms he dealt with for most of the 2013 season returned following Texas’ season-opening win over North Texas.

Texas coach Charlie Strong announced last Wednesday that Ash’s career was over. On Monday, the senior quarterback addressed the media for the first time since the announcement and despite the unfortunate turn of events, Ash proclaimed himself as “a victor, not a victim.”

According to Orangebloods.com’s Anwar Richardson, Ash started off by thanking the Texas fans, his teammates and family before saying he has no regrets about his career or the way it played out and wouldn’t change anything about his time at Texas.

Ash is on schedule to graduate in December and would have had an additional year of eligibility moving forward. Despite his desire to keep playing, Ash said he knew it was in his best interests to give up the game.

Ash made the decision to end his career after “day seven or eight of having a headache.” As for the current state of his health, Ash said that he hasn’t had “a lot of memory loss” and is unsure about how the symptoms will impact his health in the long term.

In parts of four seasons with the Longhorns, Ash completed 385-of-613 pass attempts for 4,728 yards with 32 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

With Ash out, sophomore Tyrone Swoopes has filled in. The Longhorns are 1-2 this season heading into Saturday’s road game against Kansas.
