Offensive lineman transferring from Texas A&M to Baylor
A promising young offensive lineman is transferring from one Texas school to another.
Redshirt freshman offensive tackle Ishmael Wilson is transferring from Texas A&M to Baylor to be closer to his sick mother in Dallas. Wilson, a four-star recruit in A&M’s 2013 class, told the Waco Tribune that he plans to arrive in Waco in time for Baylor’s second summer session next week.
Wilson, a 6-foot-4, 302-pound from Lancaster, Texas in suburban Dallas, also plans to apply for an NCAA hardship waiver so he doesn’t lose a year of eligibility.
“College Station is just too far, and I wanted to be closer. I talked to the Baylor coaches about what they need. I thought this was the best school for me,” Wilson told the Tribune.
If the NCAA grants his waiver request, Wilson will have four years of eligibility and will be able to play this upcoming season. If he is forced to sit out a year per NCAA transfer rules, he will have three years to play for the Big 12 champion Bears.
Wilson told the Tribune that he picked Baylor over other in-state transfer destinations like SMU and TCU.
“Baylor plays good people, and winning the Big 12 is a bonus,” he said. “The campus is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Those gold helmets are phenomenal and they’re getting a new stadium built.”
Rivals rated Wilson has the No. 209 overall prospect in the 2013 class, the 27th best tackle in the nation and the 17th-best player in the state of Texas.
