Four Georgia football players arrested for attempting to deposit student tuition checks twice
Four Georgia players were arrested and charged with counts of theft by deception Monday for presenting 11 student checks for deposit twice.
DL James DeLoach, WR Uriah LeMay, S Tray Matthews and DL Jonathan Taylor were "double-dipping" according to UGA police chief Jimmy Williamson, via the Athens Banner-Herald. The checks were each $71.50.
All of the charges are misdemeanors. LeMay has four charges against him, Matthews has three and DeLoach and Taylor have two.
Police said that DeLoach, Matthews and Taylor electronically deposited the checks via a mobile Wells Fargo app and then took the checks to a SunTrust bank location to attempt to cash them. LeMay is accused of taking four checks his roommate, an unnamed Georga athlete, cashed electronically and attemptiong to cash them again.
In a Tuesday statement, Georgia coach Mark Richt said he was aware of the incident and it would "be handled in an appropriate way."
Matthews started six games last year as a freshman while hobbled by a hamstring injury. He had 36 total tackles and an interception in eight games.
DeLoach had four total tackles in five games as a sophomore in 2013. Taylor appeared in 10 games and had a sack. LeMay was a redshirt freshman last season.
If Matthews is suspended for any length of time it means that Georgia will be especially shorthanded at the safety position. Georgia safety Josh Harvey-Clemons was dismissed from the team in February after he was initially suspended for the first three games of 2014. Harvey-Clemons was reportedly dismissed for a second violation of the school's marijuana policy.
