WNC Week 10 high school baseball power rankings: Asheville High makes big climb

It's the final week of the baseball season, and more than half of the conferences in WNC is still up for grabs.

With playoffs on the horizon, teams will look to grab momentum before heading into the postseason with big wins this week.

Here are the Week 10 Western North Carolina high school baseball power rankings.

1. Roberson (18-4)

The Rams knocked off West Henderson, 4-2, behind a big day from junior Zeb Swangim (save, three RBIs) to solidify their first-place spot. With a win over Asheville High this week, Roberson will clinch the Mountain Athletic Conference.

Last week: No. 1. This week: at No. 6 Asheville High (Tuesday), vs. No. 6 Asheville High (Thursday)

2. West Henderson (17-4)

The Falcons went 1-2 last week but faced a brutal schedule with No. 1 Roberson and two games against No. 3 Tuscola. After beating the Mountaineers handedly on Thursday, West Henderson is in control of the Mountain 7 Conference.

Last week: No. 3. This week: at No. 4 North Henderson (Tuesday), vs. No. 4 North Henderson (Thursday)

3. Tuscola (16-5)

Tuscola could have clinched the Mountain 7 Conference on Thursday but fell to West Henderson. The Mountaineers still can win a share of the title if West Henderson loses at least once to North Henderson this week.

Last week: No. 2. This week: vs. North Buncombe (Thursday)

4. North Henderson (16-6)

The Knights took down then-No. 9 Pisgah twice last week to put themselves in position to earn a share of the Mountain 7 Conference. It won't be an easy task – North Henderson will have to sweep No. 2 West Henderson.

Last week: No. 4. This week: vs. No. 2 West Henderson (Tuesday), at No. 2 West Henderson (Thursday)

5. Hayesville (15-2)

Hayesville took the Smoky Mountain Conference crown with two wins over then-No. 6 Robbinsville by a combined score of 18-3. Its 15-game win streak is the longest in WNC.

Last week: No. 5. This week: at Brevard (Friday, doubleheader)

6. Asheville High (13-8)

The Cougars, winners of eight straight, are this week's biggest movers. They'll climb even higher if they can knock off Roberson this week.

Last week: No. 10. This week: vs. No. 1 Roberson (Tuesday), at No. 1 Roberson (Thursday)

7. Asheville Christian Academy (11-7)

Senior Chase James delivered the Lions a win against Lakeway Christian Academy with a three-run home run in the sixth inning. ACA has won six straight since falling to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

Last week: No. 8. This week: at Greenville Hurricanes (Tuesday), at Hickory Christian Academy (Wednesday)

8. Swain County (10-4)

The Maroon Devils' offense has been explosive in conference play, scoring 113 runs over nine games. Seniors Carter Hayes and Bradyn Ruais have each driven in 20 runs.

Last week: Unranked. This week: at Andrews (Monday), vs. Hiwassee Dam (Tuesday), at Hiwassee Dam (Thursday)

9. Mountain Heritage (9-7)

The Cougars walked off Madison in extras in the first game of a doubleheader Friday, then scored eight runs in the seventh in an 18-14 win in the second game. They need to sweep Draughn to share the Western Highlands Conference title.

Last week: Unranked. This week: vs. McDowell (Monday), at Draughn (Tuesday), vs. Draughn (Friday)

10. Robbinsville (10-5)

Robbinsville dropped both of its games to Hayesville last week. They close the regular season against Murphy.

Last week: No. 6. This week: vs. Murphy (Tuesday), at Murphy (Thursday)
