MADISON – Wisconsin’s non-conference schedule for the 2023-24 men’s college basketball season continues to take shape.

UW is set to face host Providence on Nov. 14 in the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games.

The full pairings, which also include Marquette, were announced Wednesday.

UW is set to open the season Nov. 10 against visiting Tennessee, plays on Nov. 20 and 22 in the Fort Meyers Tip-off and has a road game set for Dec. 9 at Arizona.

The pairings for the Fort Meyers Tip-off have not been announced but UW could face Virginia, SMU or West Virginia in the opener.

UW and Providence have met five times, with the Friars holding a 4-1 lead. The last meeting was in the 2021-22 season. UW, missing guard Johnny Davis, suffered a 63-58 home loss.

Providence finished 13-7 in the Big East and 21-12 overall last season. The Friars lost to Connecticut, 73-66, in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament and were seeded No. 11 in the NCAA Tournament. They lost to No. 6 Kentucky, 61-53, in the first round.

Head coach Ed Cooley left Providence to take the job at Georgetown. Providence officials hired Kim English, who had been the head coach at George Mason the previous two seasons, to replace Cooley. English compiled a 34-29 record at George Mason.

The Friars return their No. 1 and No. 3 scorers from last season, forward Bryce Hopkins (15.8 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game) and guard Devin Carter (13.0, 4.9).

Marquette will play at Illinois in Gavitt Games

Also on Nov. 14 in the Gavitt Games, Marquette will face Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.

The teams met in 2021 with the Golden Eagles edging the 10th-ranked Fighting Illini, 67-66, at Fiserv Forum in a signature victory of head coach Shaka Smart's first season at MU.

The Golden Eagles figure to be among the top teams in the nation next season. MU's other key nonconference opponents include home games against Texas and Notre Dame, an away game at UW and a loaded slate at the Maui Invitational.

Illinois has a revamped roster headlined by graduate transfer Marcus Domask, the 2019 Wisconsin Mr. Basketball who played four seasons at Southern Illinois.
