"Sooley" is the story of a talented young basketball player from South Sudan who follows his hoops dreams to the United States to play college basketball. News 3 Sports Director Adam Winkler chats 1-on-1 with Grisham, and learns part of his book research for "Sooley" involved multiple connections from Virginia - which makes sense, as Grisham lives in Charlottesville. "I'm close friends with Tony Bennett, the [Virginia head men's basketball] coach," Grisham explained.
"In terms of basketball culture, great fans, and really good academics which is also a big thing for me. Coach Bennett and his coaching staff are one of the best in the country. I feel like I will have the best conditions to become a better player and person."
Duke opened its 1984 ACC schedule on January 7 in Charlottesville with something to prove. Duke was coming off back-to-back 17-loss seasons and had lost nine straight games to the Virginia Cavaliers. Duke was young-at a time when youth frequently was fatal-and very thin.
