Wilmington-area high school sports top performers April 15-20

We've almost reached the end of the high school sports week, but we still have some big matchups to look forward to.

Some upsets took place Tuesday night as the Laney boys lacrosse team (12-3, 9-3 MEC) handed Topsail (13-2, 10-1) its first conference loss of the season. In baseball, fourth-placed South Brunswick (9-8, 5-4) edged out Ashley (14-3, 6-3) to push the Screaming Eagles out of a three-way tie for the Mideastern Conference's top spot.

Here are the best high school sports performances from around the Wilmington-area for the week of April 15-20.

Thursday

Baseball

Dylan Welch, Sr., Ashley: Welch went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple as Ashley defeated Wilmington Christian 10-3.

Luke Vargo, Sr., Hoggard: Vargo went 3-4 with two RBIs, one of which came on a seventh-inning double that tied the Vikings with West Brunswick 3-3. Hoggard would go on to win the game 6-3 in extra innings.

Boys lacrosse

Kayden Robles, Soph., Topsail: Robles scored six goals as the Pirates defeated Croatan 16-7.

Connor Hinson, Sr., Topsail: Hinson scored three times in the win.

Alex Davis, Sr., Topsail: Davis found the back of the net thrice, adding one assist in the win.

Girls lacrosse

Lillian Austin, Sr., Topsail: Austin scored nine goals and added two assists as Topsail defeated Croatan 17-6.

Martha Smith, Jr., Topsail: Smith scored four goals and provided four assists in the win.

Tuesday

Baseball

Jaden Marvin, Sr., South Brunswick: Marvin went 4-for-4 with two runs scored as the Cougars defeated Ashley 4-3.

Luke Vargo, Sr., Hoggard: Vargo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double as Hoggard beat West Brunswick 6-3 in eight innings.

Rhett Britt, Soph., Topsail: Britt threw 10 strikeouts as Topsail defeated New Hanover 5-1.

Jake Foster, Sr., Laney: Foster hit a home run as Laney defeated North Brunswick 5-3.

Matthew Naylor, Soph., Wilmington Christian: Naylor was walked four times, resulting in three runs as the Patriots dominated East Columbus 17-7.

Softball

Gracie Mabrey, Sr., Hoggard: Mabrey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of triples as Hoggard defeated West Brunswick 11-1.

Macey Ciamillo, Jr., Hoggard: The junior pitched nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Olivia Brown, Fr., South Brunswick: Brown went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, a double and a triple as the Cougars defeated Ashley 16-5.

Gracin Johnson, Soph., South Brunswick: Johnson recorded three RBIs and a triple in the win.

Tyianna Cummings, Jr., South Brunswick: Cummings went 3-for-4 and scored four runs in the win.

Jaylyn Noble, Sr., Topsail: Noble went 2-for-3 with three RBIS, a double and three runs scored as Topsail defeated New Hanover 17-0.

Rylee Reuter, Sr., Topsail: Reuter recorded two RBIs and a double in the win.

Jamiah Johnson, Sr., Pender: Johnson went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of triples as Pender defeated Whiteville 8-2.

Girls soccer

Ellis Kelly, Jr., Hoggard: Kelly scored twice and assisted on one more goal as the Vikings defeated New Hanover 7-0.

Claire Furmidge, Fr., Cape Fear Academy: The freshman scored three goals and added one assist as the Hurricanes defeated Arendell Parrott Academy.

Boys lacrosse

Cooper Wert, Jr., Ashley: Wert scored seven goals and provided two assists as Ashley defeated North Brunswick 19-2.

Burke Tribble, Sr., Ashley: Tribble scored three times in the win.

Ethan Tribble, Soph., Ashley: The sophomore scored twice and delivered four assists in the win.

Carter Warlick, Sr., Laney: Warlick scored a hat trick and recorded three assists as Laney defeated Topsail 13-11.

James Nix, Soph., Laney: Nix scored three times in the win.

Girls lacrosse

Camden Reed, Fr., Hoggard: Reed scored five goals as the Vikings defeated New Hanover 19-11.

Logan Campbell, Sr., Hoggard: Campbell scored four times in the win.

Lillian Austin, Sr., Topsail: Austin found the back of the net five times while dealing four assists in the Pirates 18-7 win over Laney.

Melina Toronto, Jr., Topsail: Toronto scored five times in the win,

Avery White, Jr., Topsail: White scored five times and recorded four assists in the win.

Morgan Hill, Jr., South Brunswick: Hill scored four times as the Cougars defeated West Brunswick 9-5.

Laura Sparks, Sr., South Brunswick: Sparks scored three times in the win.

Megan Connaughton, Sr., Cape Fear Academy: The senior scored three goals and added one assist as the Hurricanes fell to Greensboro Day School 10-9 in overtime.

Macy Stengle, Jr., Cape Fear Academy: Stengle scored thrice in the loss, adding one assist.

Boys golf

Maddux Cook, Jr., Hoggard: Cook was the co-medalist in Monday's Mideastern Conference match at Pine Vally Country Club, shooting 67.

Carson Etters, Jr., New Hanover: Etters was the co-medalist in Monday's match, also shooting 67.

Baseball

Ryder Whitacre, Sr., Wilmington Christian: Whitacre went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, three runs scored and a double as the Patriots defeated Hilltop 15-0.

Maddoux Batts, Soph., Wilmington Christian: Batts threw eight strikeouts in 3 innings pitched.
