ORLANDO — Tiger Woods had the option of using a cart while playing Friday's pro-am at the PNC Championship, but the battered 15-time major champion declined.

"Well, I felt like I was physically fit to do it, and also, walking is always better for my back," he said, after playing 18 holes at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club with his son, Charlie.

"I just wanted to keep it loose and keep it going, and we're just having so much fun, it doesn't really matter. We had a good time doing it."

Woods, who lives on Jupiter Island, is playing his second event since undergoing ankle surgery two weeks after withdrawing from the Masters in April. The procedure was to help with the arthritis that has resulted from injuries suffered in his 2021 car crash.

He survived four rounds at the Hero World Challenge two weeks ago, shooting even par and placing 18th in the 20-man field. He and Charlie tee off at 8:22 a.m. Saturday for the first day of the 36-hole event. The weather will be cool and windy with rain expected to arrive late morning.

Tiger, 47, said he is feeling better than he did at the Hero.

"Today was definitely a bit better," he said. "I was able to knock a lot of the rust off there at Hero and my hands felt better with control hitting shots, and especially today with the wind blowing as hard as it was, I was able to hit flighted shots nicely, which was not quite on par or as sharp as I was, as I wanted to be at Hero."
