West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:26

Despite dominating for large parts at London Stadium, Brighton settle for a goalless draw with fellow top-six hopefuls West Ham in the Premier League. Areola was forced into some eight saves, his most in a league home game since making 10 against Manchester City in September, as the Seagulls controlled proceedings on the road. Substitute Ferguson went close, as did Gross on two occasions, while Moder blazed over a great opportunity towards the end of the second half. As for the Hammers’ attacking chances, Ward-Prowse was denied in the first half by Steele, while Soucek prodded wide after the interval. Moyes will see it as a good point, although this marks a first clean sheet of the season for De Zerbi’s visitors, who move up to seventh in the league table and one place behind the hosts. Both sides now take a break from league action to take part in the FA Cup third round, in which West Ham host Bristol City on Sunday, while Brighton visit Stoke City the day before. That is all for now, until next time – goodbye!

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

FULL-TIME: WEST HAM 0-0 BRIGHTON

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:23

Estupinan bursts down the left flank before standing up a delicate cross that Hinshelwood heads straight at Areola. That will be game over at London Stadium.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:22

It has been over 30 minutes since West Ham last attempted a shot in this game. This has been a turgid end to this clash from the Hammers.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:20

Ferguson needlessly clips the ankles of Ogbonna, who races out of defence before winning a cheap free-kick inside West Ham's half. This game will likely end as a goalless draw, which would represent Brighton's first clean sheet of the season.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:18

There will be at least five additional minutes to end this game as West Ham continue to cling on in the face of a stream of Brighton attacks.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:17

WHAT A STOP! London Stadium erupts with frustration as Gross is afforded too much room to roll through the middle for Lallana. The former Liverpool midfielder spins on the edge of the area before his whipped right-footed strike is pushed away by a diving Areola, who keeps West Ham in this clash once again with his seventh stop of the game.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:15

No other player at London Stadium has had more shots than Ferguson (three), who was only introduced to the game in the 67th minute. Can the Brighton forward find a decisive late goal?

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:13

OVER! Milner has space on the left flank from Lallana's throughball and delivers a curling cross towards the penalty spot. Gross cannot make the required contact but the loose ball falls to Moder, who can only blaze over at the back post when unmarked. De Zerbi drops to his knees on the touchline after yet another Brighton miss.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:11

Johnson, on his first Premier League start of the season, has an issue in the far corner and needs some medical attention from the West Ham staff. It looks like a touch of cramp, which Moyes will hope the right-back can battle through to finish this game that remains level heading into the final minutes.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:11

Moder has tons of time on the right-hand side to swing a fine cross towards the near post. Gross throws himself at the delivery but cannot reach as Areola and the West Ham defence escape without punishment.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:09

This is the first time Areola, having been forced into six stops this game, has made at least five saves in a home Premier League match for West Ham since September against Manchester City (10). That shows the dominance of Brighton so far, albeit without reward.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:08

Lallana makes a good run down the right-hand side before angling a low cross towards the near post, from which Ferguson attempts a cute flick-on. Ogbonna and Mavropanos are equal to the task, though, as the pair block before the Italian defender clears long.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:06

Brighton have scored more goals via substitutes than any other Premier League side this season (12). Can one of De Zerbi's changes make the difference here?

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:05

WIDE! Not for the first time in this game, Gross goes close with a header. Milner stands up an inviting centre towards the penalty spot, where the Germany midfielder nods a tame effort just wide to Areola's right.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:04

Brighton have kept just three away clean sheets in the Premier League since the start of last season, beating West Ham 2-0 in August 2022, Bournemouth 2-0 in April 2023 and Arsenal 3-0 in May 2023. The Seagulls appear on course for a rare shutout here, unless there is some late drama.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:03

Owing to Webster's injury, it appears De Zerbi has entrusted Hinshelwood with a move from right-back to the centre of defence. The versatile Brighton midfielder has been asked to do a number of positional tasks during his time under the Italian, who clearly has a lot of faith in him.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:01

Webster, who has only just returned to fitness, is unable to continue with injury. De Zerbi brings the centre-back off for Moder. It will be interesting to see how Brighton cover the defender’s absence with another makeshift addition to their line-up.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:01

Substitution Facundo Valentín Buonanotte Adam David Lallana

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:00

Prior to Mubama's introduction, Webster is down and requires medical attention. De Zerbi is already without the injured Igor and suspended Dunk, so needs the English defender to be fine to continue.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

21:00

Moyes makes his first change of the game by sending on Mubama for Benrahma. That substitution will likely see Bowen move to his favoured right-wing position to cater for the striker’s introduction.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:59

Ward-Prowse hangs a right-footed cross towards the back post that Johnson immediately volleys across the face of goal. Steele is the quickest to react, though, as the Brighton goalkeeper sweeps up the danger at his near post.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:58

Paqueta has been involved in five goals in his last four Premier League home games (one goal, four assists), as many as in his first 21 appearances at the London Stadium (two goals, three assists). What a miss the injured Brazilian has been for Moyes here.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:57

SO CLOSE! The Seagulls are in complete control as Milner and Gross dictate play from outside the area. Ferguson then creates a shooting opportunity, flicking past Alvarez to make space for a left-footed volley that he drags just wide of the right-hand post from inside the West Ham box. Almost an instant impact from the substitute!

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:54

Having failed to leave his mark, Welbeck is withdrawn for Ferguson in a like-for-like swap up top. What an option for De Zerbi to have off the bench.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:53

Brighton are upping the pressure as Joao Pedro curls towards the back post, where Hinshelwood's redirected header fails to find a team-mate. West Ham must come through this period unscathed.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:52

Welbeck has scored more Premier League goals against West Ham than he has against any other opponent (six). However, five of his six goals against them have come in home games. The former England striker has been largely a spectator thus far.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:51

Steele claims Ward-Prowse's right-sided corner with two hands, ushering the challenging West Ham attackers out the way. Mavropanos and Ogbonna will have to return to the centre of defence after that set-piece opportunity comes to nothing.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:50

Mavropanos launches long for Bowen to chase, and he duly obliges by beating Van Hecke in a race before slamming a cross against the Brighton defender to win a corner. What an effort by the former Hull City forward, who creates a chance for Ward-Prowse to deliver.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:49

BIG MISS! Benrahma capitalises on a loose ball on the left flank, powering a cross straight at Bowen, who chests towards the back post. Soucek is ready and waiting but can only prod a right-footed poke wide to Steele's right. A great chance goes begging for the Hammers.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:47

WHAT A CHANCE! Buonanotte rolls into the left flank for Joao Pedro, who coasts past a couple of West Ham defenders and sends Alvarez to the floor on his burst towards the penalty spot. The former Watford forward creates his own chance out of nothing but powers a right-footed effort straight at Areola, who parries down to save before claiming the rebound.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:46

Fornals has space towards the right of the area and ignores the crossing options, instead shooting straight at Steele with a low left-footed drive. Moyes' side look somewhat out of ideas in attack.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:45

Bowen loses out to Van Hecke but recovers with a sliding tackle to dispossess Buonanotte, who takes an age through the middle in possession. This is a scrappy affair, but can one side find the much-needed opening goal?

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:42

GOOD STOP! Joao Pedro ghosts through the West Ham midfield before offloading to Buonanotte, who prods to his left inside the area. Welbeck whips a first-time right-footed effort that Areola parries away before Brighton fail to capitalise on a follow-up opportunity.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:41

Handball? Hinshelwood enjoys another foray forward from right-back and his low cross strikes the sliding Emerson. Brighton appeal for handball and a penalty but the referee and then the VAR allow play to go on.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:39

Kudus has scored more home goals in all competitions than any other West Ham player this season (nine). The last player to score 10+ home goals in their first season with the Hammers was Teddy Sheringham in 2004-05. The Ghana midfielder, who had to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations, has been a sore miss for Moyes' side.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:37

Buonanotte commits his third foul of the game by pulling on the arm of Soucek, who dwells on the ball for too long before winning a cheap free-kick. The Brighton youngster cannot be too far off a caution if his cynical efforts continue.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:36

Johnson continues to occupy an inside position from right-back, allowing Fornals more space out wide. The tactical nuances are perhaps more what may be expected from De Zerbi, whose side look assured in possession without threatening Areola's goal too often.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:33

West Ham have won each of their last three Premier League games that have been level at half-time, while Brighton lost their last such league game against Arsenal in December (a 2-0 loss).

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:33

The ball is rolling once again at London Stadium as the second half gets underway!

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:20

West Ham and Brighton have mustered just 0.74 expected goals (xG) between them, with the Seagulls' 0.56 shading the comparison owing to Gross' headed chance towards the end of the half. De Zerbi's men have seen a lot of the ball, too, but have done little with it and could introduce teenage star Ferguson from the bench for a much-needed attacking spark. Moyes' side, who are missing Kudus and Paqueta, must find a way to impose more control on this Premier League encounter if they are to challenge in the next period.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:19

It has been a slow opening 45 minutes at London Stadium, where West Ham and Brighton head in goalless at the break. Ward-Prowse was thwarted by Steele with the Hammers' best first-half chance, while Areola denied Hinshelwood and Gross from close range with two fine stops. As it stands, the two European contenders are cancelling one another out with improvements needed from both sides after half-time.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:18

HALF-TIME: WEST HAM 0-0 BRIGHTON

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:18

Close! Ward-Prowse delivers the deep free-kick towards the left of the area, where Emerson volleys back across goal. Mavropanos and Bowen both line up for a tap-in but the pair miss the low cross before Brighton hook a clearance away.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:17

Buonanotte hacks through the back of Fornals and is perhaps fortunate to escape a caution for what was his second foul in this game. West Ham will have a free-kick to end this half, with just one minute of additional time indicated.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:16

Fornals, Emerson and Benrahma all try and fail with crosses from either flank. Van Hecke is the main defender, heading away with ease in front of Soucek and Bowen. Moyes needs more quality from his attacking players to create a chance.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:14

GOOD SAVE! Milner is afforded too much room from the left flank and curls an inviting cross towards the penalty spot. Gross is completely unmarked, with the freedom to pick either corner, but heads straight at Areola, who makes a fine reflex stop to keep the scores level.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:13

It will be an interesting half-time break for Moyes and De Zerbi if this game remains level. Neither side has been exceptionally poor, in the same way neither has been incredibly attractive in their play. It has hardly been a spectacle for the neutral, put it that way!

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:10

West Ham have won their last three home games in all competitions by an aggregate score of 7-0. They last won four in a row on home soil without conceding within the same season back in October/November 1994 (a run of five). It has been a slow start from both sides to this one, though.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:08

West Ham's defence back off and invite Buonanotte to take a long-range strike. The Brighton attacker duly obliges but slices a woeful left-footed effort well over Areola's target.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:07

WIDE! Bowen leads a counter-attacking charge before sliding down the left for Benrahma, who cuts inside a wall of Brighton defenders before curling a right-footed whipped attempt just wide to Steele's left. It is much better from the Hammers after their slow start.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:05

Bowen is visibly frustrated by the referee's decision after Van Hecke goes down when the pair contest for a loose ball inside Brighton's defensive third. The Seagulls restart with a free-kick as this game continues to improve.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:04

CLOSE! Gross plays a bluff and crosses the free-kick towards the back post, from which Welbeck heads back across goal. Areola tips away from the initial header before the West Ham goalkeeper denies a right-footed Hinshelwood strike from close range. That marks Brighton's first real chance of this game.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:01

Yellow Card Benjamin Anthony Johnson

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:00

Ward-Prowse swings the left-sided corner towards the far post, where Van Hecke clears. Bowen then delivers another cross but Mavropanos can only head well over when unchallenged near the six-yard area.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

20:00

GREAT STOP! Bowen causes Van Hecke all sorts of problems before Benrahma clips a decent cross towards the back post. A headed clearance loops up for Ward-Prowse, whose left-footed volley is kicked behind by some fine Steele reflexes.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:59

OFF THE POST! This is better from West Ham. Soucek has acres in the middle to get his head up and slot through for Bowen, whose right-footed drive is tipped onto the left-hand post by a stretching Steele. A belated offside flag cuts short the excitement, but that was marginal and will go down as a good chance that VAR may have reviewed.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:57

Fornals dances inside from the left flank before offloading to Ward-Prowse, whose inswinging delivery does not matter as Soucek is offside at the back post. The West Ham midfielder also seemed to nudge Milner over, with the chance going amiss due to that foul.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:55

Benrahma leaves a little space for Emerson down the left flank as the full-back cuts in and drags a poor right-footed attempt well wide of Steele's target. Hinshelwood, a makeshift right-back, does not look too comfortable when it comes to defending.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:54

CHANCE! Buonanotte finds space outside the area before his left-footed strike deflects off two West Ham defenders. Areola appears to go the wrong way for a moment before regaining his footing and making a routine save in the middle of his goal. The Frenchman will not be beaten from that sort of range too easily.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:54

It is all fairly one-way traffic still in this Premier League encounter. Brighton enjoyed over 70 per cent possession throughout the opening stages and have shown no signs of slowing down. The question for De Zerbi is as to whether his men can move the ball quicker to get at Areola's goal.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:51

Johnson speeds onto a long ball in behind from Alvarez, outpacing Milner before Steele comes out of his area to chest away. A belated offside flag proves the move redundant, anywho.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:50

Joao Pedro twists onto his left foot down the flank but his chipped cross is headed away by Bowen in front of Hinshelwood. Brighton are upping the pressure at present, though West Ham are not buckling under the persistent challenge.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:48

The home crowd inside London Stadium may not stay patient with this game for too long if it carries on in the same pattern. Brighton appear the more well-drilled and comfortable in possession, although Moyes will fancy his chances of success on the counter-attack through Bowen.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:46

West Ham have conceded at least once in all 13 of their Premier League games against Brighton, the most they’ve faced a side without ever keeping a clean sheet in the competition. There has been little action at either end here, however.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:45

Bowen bursts down the left-hand inside channel but his delicate dink towards the near post is easy for Steele to claim. The England international has little support up top when he does eventually get running forward.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:43

This is death by a thousand passes for West Ham at the moment, with Moyes' men unable to get anywhere near their opponents. De Zerbi's side are moving the ball about with ease but need to inject some pace into their play if they are to test Areola.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:40

Steele offers the away side an early scare as the Brighton goalkeeper is slow to clear when Bowen races towards him to block a long clearance. It has been a slow start to this clash at London Stadium.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:38

West Ham are sitting in a 4-1-4-1 formation out of possession, with Alvarez holding and Bowen as the lone striker. Their defensive shape is good, but the Hammers are simply chasing shadows at present as Brighton pass, pass and pass again.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:37

De Zerbi's visitors dominate possession for a prolonged spell before Alvarez sweeps up in front of Joao Pedro. The Seagulls have completely monopolised control of the ball in the opening stages.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:35

Milner is making his 632nd Premier League appearance, going level with former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs – only Gareth Barry (653) has made more appearances in the competition. How the former Liverpool man would love to mark this milestone with a victory.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:34

Bowen glides down the left-hand side before his shot deflects into the path of Alvarez, who goes down inside the area under the challenge of Gilmour. The referee points for a goal-kick and the VAR concurs with the original decision.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:31

Referee Samuel Barrott gets this Premier League clash underway!

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:28

West Ham won the reverse fixture against Brighton 3-1 in August, ending a 12-game winless league run against the Seagulls (D6 L6). They last did the league double over them in 2011-12, but they’ve never done so in the top flight. Can the Hammers achieve that feat here? We’re about to find out as kick-off approaches…

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:24

De Zerbi makes two changes from the Tottenham win, although one of them is enforced as captain Lewis Dunk misses this game due to his one-match suspension for racking up five yellow cards in the league this term. Webster comes into centre-back alongside Van Hecke, while the fit-again Estupinan starts at left-back in place of Igor Julio, who is not in the squad at all. Milner also starts in the middle in what will be another milestone Premier League appearance for the veteran.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

19:24

The big news for West Ham is that Ghana manager Chris Hughton – a former Brighton boss, too, – has insisted Mohammed Kudus travels to the Africa Cup of Nations with his country before this game, so the in-form midfielder is absent for the Hammers. Lucas Paqueta is missing through injury, while an unhappy Vladimir Coufal is not present due to apparent unsettlement over his contract situation. Johnson, Benrahma and Fornals come into the starting XI from the Arsenal win as makeshift striker Bowen continues to lead the line.
