Byram Hills 66, Rye 53
Even with a few bobbles at the end, it’s a statement win for the Bobcats.
The calendar is about to flip to February, so the Bobcats are busy ironing out the remaining wrinkles ahead of sectionals. Based on the first three quarters, they are plenty good enough to play with the multitude of Class A contenders.
After falling one win short of a Section 1 title last season, it’s County Center or bust.
Tyson Repa was dialed in. He is a nightmare matchup for the Garnets and wound up with 32 points and four assists. The senior combo guard attacked the rim for a pair of layups that had Byram Hills on top 55-42 a minute into the fourth quarter.
And that’s where things got a little too interesting.
The Bobcats did not have Chris Amenedo in the second half due to an injury, so the ballhandling was shaky. Rye climbed back within nine but managed just three points in the final three minutes.
What it means
If these teams run into each other next month in the playoffs, buy a ticket. Neither side is timid on defense so there will be a number of whistles to counter the physicality. Byram Hills has more skill. Repa and Zach Efobi are playmakers at both ends. Rye has more depth and comes in waves. Football did come up while the student sections chanted back and forth, so it’s probably fair to say the Garnets punted far too often in this game. When sets broke down, wild shots went up. That’s easily corrected.
Box score
Rye (12-3): Carson Miller 14P; Jake Kessner 13P; Henry Shoemaker 8P.
Byram Hills (10-5): Repa 32P, 4A; Max Miller 15P, 6A; Ari Dreilinger 7P, 5R; Zach Efobi 6P, 7R.
Three best players on the court
1. Tyson Repa; 2. Max Miller; 3. Carson Miller.
Quotable
“We’re still a work in progress,” Byram Hills coach Ted Repa said. “There are moments where things are really good and we’re getting better, especially defensively. But in the fourth quarter, we provided the perfect environment to give up a lead so we just have to tighten that up. It was an unusual lineup in a pressure moment, but that’s good for us.”
“We were all feeling it and our team was playing great,” Bobcats guard Tyson Repa said. “And then when Chris got hurt, it was like, ‘OK, we have to step it up now,’ because he usually gets us a solid 10 points. The crowd was into the game so it was a lot of fun.”

North Rockland 44, Pearl River 42
It was a heck of a move.
Elijah Barclay crossed over at the arc, launched into a power spin at the high post and two steps later was eyeing the rim.
The shot only touched net on the way down.
Barclay netted the only North Rockland field goal of the fourth quarter and lifted the Red Raiders to win Thursday at Pearl River, which suffered an unkind roll at the other end when Aidan McCahey got to the rim in hopes of playing overtime.
It was a hands-on defensive battle from the jump.
The Pirates were down 40-29 in the closing minutes of a bumpy third quarter but gave up just four points over the last 10-plus minutes. After halting an 11-0 run, North Rockland did not give up a point over the last 3:41 of the fourth quarter.
What it means
Both sides are committed to defense, so that’s never going to be a concern. The Red Raiders have four players back from a team that made a state championship run last season and are beginning to get comfortable offensively. Barclay is a lot to deal with 1 on 1, but there are multiple options in this lineup. The Pirates are more dependent on McCahey and are working to establish second and third scoring options. A contested 3 cannot be the go-to whenever the shot clock ticks down to four seconds.
Box score
North Rockland (11-5): Elijah Barclay 15P; Max Fausel 9P; Aidan Santiago 9P.
Pearl River (12-2): Aidan McCahey 17P; Ryan Houston 14P, Sean O’Brien 7P.
Three best players on the court
1. Barclay; 2. McCahey; 3. Aidan Santiago.
Quotable
“Sometimes these guys think we still have those guys from last season and are looking around like, ‘Who’s going to take the shot. Who’s going to make the play. Who’s going to lead?’ ” Red Raiders coach Jamie Ryan said. “That’s what we’ve been figuring out.”
“Coach trusted me with the shot and was like, ‘Go right at them,’ ” Barclay said of the final basket. “I listened to coach.”
“The first six or seven games of the year we were not scoring too well,” Pirates coach Jerry Houston said. “Aidan was comfortable in his role. We played a lot in the summer and the fall, so he was fine. The biggest adjustment was the other guys finding their spots. We can only go so far with just one guy doing it. Our growth has been good in the last month because we’re getting more balance.”

Peekskill 72, Nyack 65
The momentum is real.
Peekskill ran its winning streak to 10 games Wednesday and is forcing every Class AA contender to do some advance scouting. The Red Devils are focusing on small goals like a league title right now, but they are good enough to make a County Center appearance in the weeks ahead.
Is there a backcourt in Section 1 with more wingspan?
Jaden Chavis and Zeke Jones are 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-3, respectively, and they are impact players who can fill up the scorebook. They got Peekskill in front 23-6 in less than six minutes and came up with the rally-killing baskets down the stretch when the RiverHawks came back.
The last six games are certainly winnable, so the Red Devils are in position to lock up a couple of home playoff games.
What it means
There is some detail work to be done as Peekskill completes the regular season. And the players do seem to understand the consequences for each miscue get more severe once sectionals tip off. If the final weeks of the season are productive, the Red Devils are going places. It’s not hard to see how Nyack took down North Rockland and Pearl River. When in the right mindset, this is a dangerous team. Ray Boutin is a lot for any defense to deal with. There’s an upset or two still to come from this group, especially if the level of trust improves.
Box score
Nyack (7-7): Ray Boutin 29P; Lucas Feliciano 12P; Joseph Kalaj 7P.
Peekskill (14-1): Jaden Chavis 22P; Zeke Jones 18P; Amir Thomas 17P.
Three best players on the court
1. Ray Boutin; 2. Jaden Chavis; 3. Zeke Jones.
Quotable
“That was the best first quarter we played all season,” Chavis said. “We have confidence that we’re more athletic than anybody else, that we can run teams out of the gym. We just have to put four quarters together now. That’s didn’t happen today. I feel like if we play all four quarters, nobody is going to compete with us.”
“Tonight, it was a phenomenal first quarter, lights out at both ends of the court,” second-year Peekskill coach Tyrone Searight said. “The one thing we have to do to be a better team going into the playoffs is communicate. We do a lot of different things on defense, and we have to communicate better.”

Mamaroneck 72, Mount Vernon 61
These guys are serious.
Over the last 10 days, Mamaroneck has clicked off quality wins against Scarsdale, New Rochelle and Mount Vernon. Those are league rivals with Section 1 title potential. An impressive victory over the Knights on Tuesday locked in favorite status.
The Tigers have a step on the crowd in Class AAA.
Cosmo Hardinson and Will Plunkett played like established stars after halftime and helped Mamaroneck open a decisive third quarter with an 8-0 run and close with an 8-0 run. They do grow up fast. A year ago, Hardison was a secondary option and Plunkett was a freshman with a potential.
It was a 52-40 lead after Jacob Fisher dropped a deflating 3 over the Mount Vernon zone with 6:29 to go. From there it was a matter of playing smart against the Knights pressure.
There was no sign of apprehension.
What it means
Mamaroneck would be smart to look at the calendar after this one. It’s still January and the Tigers have to deal with New Rochelle, Scarsdale and Mount Vernon again before sectionals. Momentum can be lost quickly. It’s hard to imagine this group of grinders becoming complacent, but perspective is helpful. Mount Vernon led most of the second quarter but did not hold up when momentum got away. The Knights are learning there is a difference between aggression and toughness. Mount Vernon was physical, but did not show enough character and resilience when the Tigers took control.
Box score
Mount Vernon (7-4): Tavien Tyler 18P; Nate Edwards 13P; Hadi Adeyi 8P.
Mamaroneck (13-1): Will Plunkett 29P, 7R, 5A; Cosmo Hardinson 22P, 10R; Jacob Fisher 14P; Brandon Burrell 9P, 5A.
Three best players on the court
1. Will Plunkett; 2. Cosmo Hardinson; 3. Tayvien Tyler.
Quotable
“We’ve been playing great basketball since the second game of the season,” said Plunkett, whose 25 points established a career high. “That was a tough loss (to North Rockland) and it was important that we stayed together because we’ve been on a roll ever since. The lineup has been different the last couple of games, but having guys step up is a great sign.”
“Yeah, they have surprised me,” Tigers coach Tyrone Carver said. “We have great character kids who work extremely hard and we’ve dealt with some adversity this season. Guys have stepped up and made plays, our leadership had been phenomenal. It’s definitely (Hardinson’s) locker room, but I don’t think it’s his locker room alone. We have good, quality leaders who lead.”
