Week 1 high school football live scoreboard, rewind (FRIDAY UPDATES)

Zeeland West head coach John Shillito talks with his players during practice Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at Zeeland Stadium.

Week 1 of the high school football season was ready to kick off. Weather had other ideas.

All eight of the Holland area football teams were scheduled to be in action Thursday but heat index delays and severe weather delays made it more difficult and most games were moved to Friday.

Hamilton 46, Plainwell 6

The Hawkeyes got right to work after their game was postponed a day because of weather.

Hamilton scored on its opening drive, then quickly got two scores up with a blocked punt for a touchdown.

Ben Boehm led the way for the Hawkeyes with two rushing touchdowns and an interception return for a touchdown.

Saugatuck, 25, Buchanan 14

The Trailblazers won their season opener on Friday after being postponed from Thursday.

Saugatuck led 18-7 at halftime thanks to a quick start that saw Matt Hartgerink scamper for an 80-yard touchdown run. Bradley Moorer followed with a 21-yard run before Hartgerink hit Carter Miller for a 36-yard TD pass with two seconds remaining in the half.

Miller caught another TD pass in the second half, this one from Norm Bos for 30 yards.

Hartgerink had 20 carries for 125 yards rushing. Will Doucette had 18 carries for 101 yards rushing.

On defense, Hartgerink had 10 tackles, and a fumble recovery and interception. Cass Stanberry had 12 tackles and a forced fumble.

"The kids played a physical, tough game against a very good Buchanan team," Saugatuck coach Bill Dunn said. "We talked all week about playing through adversity, which will happen in any game, but especially the first game. We made our share of mistakes but we also made plays in critical moments when we needed to on both sides of the ball. Big win to start the season."

Grand Ledge 37, West Ottawa 30

In a 30-30 game with under two minutes to play, West Ottawa took a deep shot to the end zone, going for it all on a pass from Connor Knapp to Ruben Esparza.

Knapp’s pass was intercepted by Grand Ledge's Preston Bohnet, and about a minute later, Bohnet scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to seal a 37-30 win for the Comets.

But it was an explosive night for the Panther offense behind Esparza and a giant game from Kayden Forbes. The Panthers gained 373 yards on the night, with Forbes and Esparza combining for 340 on the night.

Rolando Robelin answered with a quick touchdown and conversion to push the lead to 24-8, then the game was put out out of reach on one gamble by the Lancers.

Deep in their own territory, the Lancers tried a fake punt that failed with 28 seconds remaining in the half.

The very next play, Zeeland West's Parker Holman scored on a 28-yard run up the middle with 23 seconds to go in the half and a 32-8 lead, ending any chance of the Lancers grabbing the momentum.
