Waynesboro High School names new football coach

WAYNESBORO — Shonn Bell has been named the new head football coach at Waynesboro High School. The school division made the announcement Thursday afternoon.

The school division said it did a comprehensive selection process and Bell emerged as the ideal candidate to lead the football program into the future.

The previous coach, Brandon Jarvis, announced he was stepping down in February. Jarvis coached four years at Waynesboro, finishing with a 7-30 record.

Bell is from Waynesboro but played his high school career in Germany where his father was stationed in the Army. He did return to the area midway through his senior year, attending Stuarts Draft High School where he wrestled. Bell played college football at the then Clinch Valley College, now known as the University of Virginia at Wise. He had 84 receptions for 1,224 yards and 16 touchdown at tight end for Clinch Valley and was named an NAIA Division 2 All-American.

He also played a short stint in the NFL and spent time playing in arena and indoor football leagues, as well as in NFL Europe for the Scotland Claymores.

According to the release from Waynesboro Schools, Bell coached 14 years before coming to Waynesboro.

“Coach Bell will be a great asset for WHS and Waynesboro Public Schools," said Waynesboro High School athletic director Jake Peeling. "He is someone I think can inspire our athletes to greatness, instill discipline, and foster a culture of teamwork and resilience. He is not just a football coach but someone who possesses the ability to cultivate character, both on and off the field."
