Washington football vs. Michigan score, updates, highlights from Huskies CFP title game loss

Washington football's 2023 college football season fell short of its ultimate goal on Monday as Kalen DeBoer, Michael Penix Jr. and Co. lost to top-ranked Michigan 34-13 in the College Football Playoff championship game.

The Huskies took several body blows from Michigan early as Wolverines running back Donovan Edwards scored touchdowns of 41 and 47 yards to get out to a 14-3 lead. Penix and the Washington defense refused to fold, battling back to make it 17-10 halftime deficit, but the Huskies' comeback attempt never materialized in the second half.

The Huskies could only muster a single second-half field goal and, as it turned, Edwards' two first-quarter touchdowns were ultimately enough to beat Washington. Penix completing 27 of 51 passes for 255 yards and one touchdown to two interceptions while the Huskies combined to rush 20 times for 46 yards.

Final: Michigan 34, Washington 13

8:10 p.m.: And that will do it. Michigan wins 34-13.

8:08 p.m.: Washington goes for it again on fourth down, this time failing to convert. Michigan needs only to get another first down to well and truly end this.

8:03 p.m.: Washington going for it on fourth-and-1 here. At this point the Huskies are just trying to keep it respectable.

Touchdown, Michigan: Wolverines lead 34-13

7:58 p.m.: One play later, Corum knocks it in from a yard out to all but end it.

7:56 p.m.: Penix's pass is intercepted by Sainristil, who returns it all the way down to the Washington 7-yard line.

7:55 p.m.: Penix's fourth-down pass falls incomplete, but offsetting penalties gives Washington a second chance.

7:52 p.m.: Washington's facing third-and-long but field goals do nothing at this point. Huskies are in four-down territory.

7:50 p.m.: Penix finds Odunze for a huge gain down to the Michigan 33-yard line.

7:49 p.m.: Washington's back at it with 7:09 left to play.

Touchdown, Michigan: Wolverines lead 27-13

7:44: Corum gets a 12-yard touchdown to give Michigan a 27-13 lead, and that might do it with 7:09 left to play. Washington needs to string together a scoring drive, and fast.

7:42 p.m.: Colston Loveland with a massive catch-and-run of 41 yards to the Washington 30-yard line. Two plays later, Wolverines are driving at the 15.

7:38 p.m.: Penix dumps it off to Johnson, who gets it to the 34. That makes it fourth-and-9, and Washington will once again punt. Michigan takes over at its 29.

7:36 p.m.: Penix finally hits a deep pass to Odunze, but Roger Rosengartenis called for holding to set up second-and-20.

7:36 p.m.: Penix targets Polk, but the pass is broken up.

7:32 p.m.: Three-and-out forced by Washington's defense, and Voi Tunuufi causes McCarthy to stumble just enough to keep him from scrambling again on third down. Washington to take over around its 33.

7:26 p.m.: Will Nixon drops the ball on what was certainly a first-down catch, and Washington is once again forced to punt. It goes 55 yards down to the Michigan 16.

7:24: Washington goes to Johnson on the first play of the quarter for 3 yards. Huskies are on the clock now.

Third quarter: Michigan 20, Washington 13

7:20 p.m.: Penix finds Westover for 12 yards to set up first down from the 23-yard line. That'll be the last play of the quarter.

7:20 p.m.: Another overthrow by Penix to an open receiver. He seems to be affected by Michigan's defensive front.

7:18 p.m.: Washington defense gets off the field but Michigan does well to get out near midfield and flip the battle of field position. Washington will take over at its 10-yard line.

7:17 p.m.: Heads-up play by Darren Barkins sets up third-and-10.

7:15 p.m.: McCarthy scrambles for the first on third-and-8 out to the 31-yard line. He then gets another first-down run on a designed QB run out past the 40-yard line.

7:10 p.m.: Penix has two deep pass attempts that fall incomplete, and Washington punts down to the Michigan 8.

7:07 p.m.: Penix finds Polk on a tunnel screen for another big gain, and the Huskies have the ball at their own 42-yard line.

7:06 p.m.: Penix connects with Westover for 5 yards on first down.

7:02 p.m.: That's a three-and-out forced by Washington's defense! Huskies will get it back with a chance to tie it up.

7 p.m.: Michigan gets 5 yards on first-and-10 from the 25. Washington defense will look to keep this a one-score game here.

6:56 p.m.: Washington elects to go for the field goal instead of the fourth-and-4 try from the 28. Grady Gross knocks it through from 45 yards to get UW back to within a touchdown. Michigan leads 20-13.

6:54 p.m.: Michigan's Makari Paige is called for unnecessary roughness, giving Washington an extra 15 yards down to the Michigan 34.

6:53 p.m.: Penix is back in for Washington and finds Odunze on second down for a nice chunk of yards. He gets a couple of quick throws out past midfield.

6:47 p.m.: The Washington pressure forces McCarthy to dump it off in the flat, with only a 4-yard gain. Michigan settles for the 38-yard field goal, and Washington is once again down two scores.

6:46 p.m.: Couple false starts by Michigan offense make it second-and-18.

6:44 p.m.: Corum gets a 13-yard carry to the Washington 16-yard line.

6:43 p.m.: Worse yet, Penix limps off the field. Defense needs to hold Michigan to a field goal.

6:42 p.m.: Penix's first pass of the second quarter is bobbled then intercepted by Will Johnson. Devastating start to the second half by Washington, which had built up some momentum end the first half.

Halftime: Michigan 17, Washington 10

6:20 p.m.: Some halftime stats:

  • First downs: Washington 10 | Michigan 10

  • Third downs: Washington 2 of 7 | Michigan 0 of 4

  • Fourth downs: Washington 1 of 2 | Michigan 0 of 1

  • Time of possession: Washington 17:09 | Michigan 12:51

6:17 p.m.: Washington forces a punt near midfield and gets the ball back with seconds left on the clock. They kneel it out and head into halftime down a touchdown. Huskies get the ball back out of halftime, as well.

Touchdown, Washington: Michigan leads 17-10

6:12 p.m.: On a gotta-have-it play, Penix avoids the pressure and finds McMillan for the 3-yard touchdown. He wanted Odunze first, but a (declined) holding call on Michigan has him dish the ball to McMillan instead. Huge drive there for the Huskies.y

6:11 p.m.: Washington going for it on fourth-and-goal from the 3.

6:10 p.m.: Michigan forces third-and-goal, and Michigan calls its final timeout with 1:31 left in the second quarter.

6:08 p.m.: Michigan's Mike Sainristil is called for pass interference on Jalen McMillan to set up first-and-goal at the 8.

6:04 p.m.: Passes to Odunze and Westover get Washington consecutive first down, down to the 23-yard line.

6:04 p.m.: Jack Westover with a first-down reception past midfield.

6:03 p.m.: Turnover on downs! Linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio shows blitz then backs out into the flat to knock the ball away on fourth-and-3. Washington gets the ball with decent field position with less than 5 minutes remaining and in desperate need of a score.

5:58 p.m.: It's fourth-and-3 Michigan and it looks as if the Wolverines will try and go for it from the Washington 38.

5:55 p.m.: Muhammad down with an injury.

5:54 p.m.: Michigan takes over 31-yard line and quickly gets 21 yards on their next two carries. The Wolverines are already in Washington territory, but it looks like officials missed a holding call.

5:53 p.m.: Penix just checks it down to Johnson who gets some of the necessary yardage back. Washington to punt on fourth-and-7 from the 23-yard line.

5:51 p.m.: Kenneth Grant sacks Penix for a 12-yard loss, making it second-and-22 at the 9-yard line.

5:47 p.m.: Washington defense stands strong to force a three-and-out. Michigan will punt, and Washington will take over at its 20 following a touchback.

5:42 p.m.: Turnover on downs: Washington had the exact look it wanted, but Penix overthrew a wide-open Odunze. That will give Michigan the ball back at the Wolverines' own 47.

5:41 p.m.: Another pre-snap penalty makes it third-and-19, derailing an otherwise-promising drive. Looks like Washington might stick it out on fourth-and-7.

5:39 p.m.: Snap infraction by center Parker Brailsford sets Washington back 5 yards, making it second-and-14 from the Washington 46.

5:38 p.m.: There's a 15-yard pitch-and-catch to Ja'Lynn Polk to the 50-yard line. Washington will try to get Penix in rhythm here.

5:37 p.m.: Penix to Odunze for 10 yards and a first down to the 35-yard line.

5:35 p.m.: Jabbar Muhammad with nice coverage on the third-down throw forces a field goal by Michigan. It's 17-3 Michigan.

5:31 p.m.: Third-and-4 coming up for Michigan. Washington needs a stop here.

5:30 p.m.: Corum gets 3 yards on the first carry of the second quarter.

First quarter: Michigan 14, Washington 3

5:26 p.m.: Blake Corum gets a 59-yard run to the Washington 20 to end the first quarter. Huskies need to come up with an answer on defense before this gets away from them.

5:24 p.m.: That's a three-and-out for Washington. Defense needs to step up with Michigan taking over at the 21-yard line.

Touchdown, Michigan: Wolverines lead 14-3

5:21 p.m.: For the second time of this game, Edwards bounces it out (this time right) for a 46-yard touchdown. He has two carries for 87 yards and two scores.

5:19 p.m.: Pretty throw by McCarthy over the top to Roman Wilson goes 37 yards to the Washington 46.

5:17 p.m.: Michigan's Morgan once again takes the ball out and once again is stopped short of the 15. Michigan starts at its 14.

5:13 p.m.: Penix steps up in the pocket to avoid the pressure and has Odunze one-on-one with the safety, but the throw is high. Huskies settle for a field goal to make it 7-3.

5:09 p.m.: Timeout, Washington (4:04)

5:07 p.m.: Johnson's back in the game and had a key block on an end-around for Washington to set up third-and-1. Then he powers for a first down near the 10-yard line. He does have a notable limp.

5:05 p.m.: Odunze gets a nice catch-and-run to the Michigan 26-yard line.

5:02 p.m.: Timeout, Washington (7:01)

5:01 p.m.: Michael Penix Jr. completes 3 of 4 passes for 24 yards and has Washington driving at the Michigan 42. More importantly, running back Dillon Johnson is in the injury tent. He suffered an injury scare vs. Texas in the Sugar Bowl.

Touchdown, Michigan: Wolverines lead 7-0

4:52 p.m.: Donovan Edwards is bottled up for a moment before bouncing it out to the left for a 41-yard touchdown run to get Michigan on the board. Wolverines lead 7-0 at the 10:14 mark.

4:52 p.m.: That's a 4-yard sack by Washington to make it second-and-14.

4:51 p.m.: Michigan getting tremendous upfield push and has a lot of success running the ball. That's a 15-yard run by Kalel Mullings to get Michigan to the Washington 37.

4:50 p.m.: Consecutive first-down plays gets Michigan out to the 50-yard line.
