Neshaminy's Colin Demi (1) against Central Bucks South during their boys' lacrosse game in Langhorne on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

The senior and four-year varsity player wrapped up his high school career in impressive fashion. In Neshaminy’s final game of the year, Demi had a hand in 10 of his team’s 15 goals. In addition to scoring three times, Demi dished out seven assists to his teammates to give Neshaminy a win over Upper Moreland in their season finale.

As a key contributor to Neshaminy lacrosse for four years, Demi will be hard to replace.

“Colin is a four-year lacrosse letter winner, and was named SOL National All-League after his junior season,” said head coach John Donato. “Colin's speed and athleticism makes him a competitive and exciting presence on the field. Colin had some nagging injuries he had to overcome early in the year. To have him finish up his high school career in a game where he displayed outstanding skill and effort on both sides of the field, while scoring three goals and distributing a crafty seven assists, was great to see.”

Demi will attend Penn State next year, where he plans to study Business. He received 36.83 percent of the votes.

Girls Athlete of the Week: KyLee Hangey, Pennridge

Pennridge's Kylee Hangey (7) bats against Council Rock North during their softball game in Sellersville on Monday, May 13, 2024.

While injuries prevented the Pennridge softball team from reaching its full potential this season, the Rams players refused to be discouraged.

Hangey, a four-year varsity player, helped her team by taking on new roles and being a great example to the younger players.

In the final week of the season, Hangey helped the Rams end a seven-game winless streak and conclude the year on a positive note. Against Coatesville, Hangey was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Rams to the victory. The following day, she had two more hits as the Rams earned their second straight win, this time against CB East.

“KyLee has been an asset to the Pennridge Softball program for four years,” said head coach Kristyn Marinelli. “She has been a mainstay in the outfield this season and has been smart at the plate. In addition, KyLee was able to give us a few innings in the circle in crucial moments. We are excited to follow her journey and see the great things she accomplishes in her next chapter!”

KyLee will be attending Lehigh University in the fall, where she plans to major in Civil Engineering and Architecture.

*Bonus* Defensive Player of the Week: Tommy Bryson, Harry S. Truman

Though his Tigers didn’t make the lacrosse playoffs, goalie Tommy Bryson certainly had an all-star caliber season.

The junior recorded 19 saves in the Tigers’ win over William Tennent, and against Cheltenham, he saved 85.7 percent of shots on goal to secure a 17-3 win to close out the season. The week before, Bryson had recorded his 800th career save after rejecting 14 shots on goal against CB East.

“Thomas is the heart and soul of our team,” said head coach Scott Jackson. “Thomas saved 350 shots this year alone, and is also on pace to break the state record of 1,056 saves.”

Bryson received 36.11 percent of the votes, making this the closest poll in Phillyburbs history.

Week 6 (April 29-May 5):

Girls Athlete of the Week: Dagny Mobley, New Hope-Solebury

New Hope-Solebury's Dagny Mobley (26) pitches against Quakertown during their softball game at the Richland Area Softball Association in Quakertown on Friday, April 26, 2024.

The freshman has been an integral part of the turnaround the New Hope-Solebury softball team has experienced this season. Last week alone, Mobley picked up three wins in the circle. During that span, she gave up two hits, three walks and no earned runs while striking out 25 in 10 innings.

In addition, Mobley has been a force at the plate. In her last five games, she is 9-for-15 with 12 RBIs, six walks, five runs scored and two doubles.

Mobley has been sharing pitching duties with fellow freshman Mabel Klossner. The duo has helped the Lions to a 12-5 record after last year’s 3-16 season.

“Dagny, along with Mabel, have been selfless in their commitment to their teammates and the needs of the team,” head coach Chris Marchok said. “Each of them has sacrificed personal goals and comfort because that's what we needed as a team.”

In addition, Mobley also plays shortstop when she isn’t pitching. Though it’s not a position she has played on her travel teams, Mobley has eagerly embraced her the new challenge.

“Dagny and Mabel are both terrific kids with fantastic attitudes, relentless work ethics, and commitment to their personal best each day that will lead us for the next four years,” said Marchok. “It has been wonderful to see each of them succeed, especially since they never make it about themselves.”

Boys Athlete of the Week: Jude Hamilton, Council Rock North

Council Rock North sophomore pitcher Jude Hamilton.
Council Rock North sophomore pitcher Jude Hamilton.

The sophomore pitcher has excelled this season, bringing the composure and toughness of a veteran to the mound for CR North. Last week, Hamilton pitched a complete-game shutout against Bensalem. He gave up just four hits and a lone walk while striking out eight in the 6-0 win.

“Jude is one of our three young sophomores on our team who have taken the varsity starting position and maximized their opportunities,” said head coach Matt Schram. “Jude’s ability to take the baseball on the mound in our highly emotional, important league games against our rival schools, and take the game into his hands is amazing. He pitches well above his age and experience.”

While the Indians graduated many players from last year’s 11-9 team, Hamilton and his young teammates have led the team to an 11-7 record (with two games to play) ahead of the District One playoffs.

“Jude embraces the emotions of the game and does not get rattled,” said Schram. “This is just the beginning of special things to happen to him and our program.”

Week 5 (April 23-28):

Girls Athlete of the Week: Nora Luskin, Abington

Abington freshman lacrosse player Nora Luskin.

The freshman has been a welcome addition to Abington’s varsity lacrosse squad. The starting midfielder has provided solid defense while also contributing on offense. Last week, it was Luskin’s offense in the spotlight.

Playing in overtime against CB West, ranked 10th in District One 3A, Luskin scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds on the clock, giving the Ghosts a thrilling 11-10 victory.

Nora is an all-around player and has great lacrosse IQ,” said Abington head coach Meg MacClain. “She has a passion for the sport that allows her to succeed on any part of the field.”

The win helped the Ghosts remain in playoff contention, as they now hold the 23rd spot in the 24-team-field.

“Nora’s hustle on the field allows her to be vital in the midfield whether it’s with re-defending or helping in the transition down field,” said MacClain. “As a freshman, Nora does whatever she can to help her team and gives it her all. She will continue to grow and become more confident, turning her into a great player.”

Boys Athlete of the Week: Tom Cardi, Conwell-Egan

The senior’s big week secured two major Catholic League lacrosse wins for the Eagles.

Against Archbishop Ryan, Cardi scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Eagles a victory over rival Archbishop Ryan. He finished with five goals in the 12-11 win, and had five more goals and an assist to lead the Eagles past Father Judge, 11-10. Cardi, a four-year varsity starter, will play for Arcadia University next year.

Sophomore Molly Ambrosius has been impressive in the circle for Neshaminy softball.
Sophomore Molly Ambrosius has been impressive in the circle for Neshaminy softball.

The sophomore faced a daunting task when she stepped into the circle against defending state champion North Penn last week.

Ambrosius was more than ready for the challenge, giving up just three hits while striking out five through five innings to earn the 2-0 win. It was just the second loss for North Penn in the past two seasons.

“Molly has had a phenomenal season so far,” said first-year head coach Sarah Martoccio. “She commands the circle, keeps a calm composure even in stressful situations, and has a great relationship with her teammates.”

In her next start, Ambrosius pitched a complete-game shutout against Truman, giving up just two hits and one walk while striking out 13 batters in the win.

“I am sure she is going to do amazing things not only this season, but throughout the rest of her high school career,” said Martoccio.

Boys Athlete of the Week: Luke Hillegass, CB South

Sophomore Luke Hillegass has been pitching like an ace for CB South baseball.
Sophomore Luke Hillegass has been pitching like an ace for CB South baseball.

The sophomore pitcher looked like a savvy veteran on the mound last week. Hillegass gave up a single hit while striking out eight batters against CR South, going the distance to secure the complete-game shutout and the 3-0 win.

“Luke has been strong for us on the mound; you can easily forget he's only a sophomore,” said head coach Kevin Bray. “The maturity and poise he has exemplified out there has been awesome to see.”

In 28 innings, Hillegass has given up 20 hits and four earned runs, along with 30 strikeouts.

“Luke is a little on the quiet side among the guys, but he loves to compete,” said Bray. “Those competitive juices run through his veins in a big way when he takes the mound.”

Week 3 (April 8-15):

Girls Athlete of the Week: Bella Nunn, North Penn

North Penn’s Bella Nunn makes her pitch against Pennsbury.
North Penn’s Bella Nunn makes her pitch against Pennsbury.

In her first year in the circle for the defending state champions, Nunn has handled the pressure with poise. In last week’s win over CB East, the senior didn’t allow a hit through five innings while striking out 13 in an abbreviated 14-0 victory. In addition, she crushed a three-run home run. Against Pennsbury, Nunn earned the win in a complete-game effort in which she struck out eight and gave up one earned run, and hit another home run.

Nunn, who played in the outfield last season, is a Division I recruit who commited to University of Maryland Baltimore County last fall.

“She knew coming into the season that she was following two PA Gatorade Player of the Year pitchers (Mandy Volpe and Julia Shearer),” head coach Rick Torresani said. “She has worked really hard over the past year to get ready for this season.  She wants to prove to everyone that we would not take a step backwards this year. And she has done that. I am so proud and excited for her.”

For the season, Nunn has a 1.57 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 67 innings, including one complete-game no-hitter.

Boys Athlete of the Week: Nick Simons, Upper Moreland

Upper Moreland's Nick Simons follows through during his no-hitter against Abington.
Upper Moreland's Nick Simons follows through during his no-hitter against Abington.

The sophomore pitcher has had a big impact on the Golden Bears this season. Last week, Simons achieved every pitcher’s dream when he threw a complete-game no-hitter. Going against Abington, Simons struck out 11 batters to earn the 5-1 win. In his previous start against Springfield, Simons gave up four hits while striking out nine through six innings in the 7-1 victory.

“Over the last year Nick has gone from a 3- to 4-inning JV pitcher who couldn’t consistently throw strikes into a very good varsity arm who we can count and who pitches whenever he’s available,” head coach Jim Fasano said. “Nick is a testament to what an absolutely unmatched work ethic and tremendous desire can do for a person.”

Week 2 (April 1-7):

Girls Athlete of the Week: Peyton McClain, Bristol

Bristol freshman Peyton McClain has had an impressive start to her high school softball career.
Bristol freshman Peyton McClain has had an impressive start to her high school softball career.

The freshman had a memorable high school debut. In the Warriors’ first two games of the season, McClain went 4-for-5 with six RBIs in wins over Morrisville and MaST Charter. The shortstop had three doubles, drew two walks and scored five runs over the two games.

“Being able to step in as a freshman and take over being the starting shortstop and No. 4 hitter in the lineup is no easy task,” Bristol coach Dave Chichilitti said. “However, Peyton’s attitude, desire, and talent have made the transition seamless.”

In five games this season, McClain is batting .615 with nine RBIs and 11 runs scored for the 5-0 Warriors.

“Peyton is an extremely talented young woman,” Chichilitti said. “Not only is she an incredible softball player, but she is also a Distinguished Honors Student. Peyton works extremely hard in the classroom and on the field. It’s a pleasure for me to be able to coach her and watch her start to see the fruits of her labor.”

Boys Athlete of the Week: Reed Curtier, CR South

The sophomore pitcher gave up just one hit through six innings while striking out 11 to earn a 3-0 win against Pennsbury. *Photo and additional information will be added once received.

Council Rock South's Helen Woloshyn (7) hits a single against Neshaminy during their softball game in Langhorne on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

The senior made an immediate impact in her first week as a Golden Hawk. Woloshyn recorded her 100th career stolen base in a win against Neshaminy. The leadoff hitter went 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, one RBI and one stolen base to record the milestone. In a win against Spring-Ford, she was 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases.

“Helen is a spark at the top of our line up that any team would love to have,” said Scott Molle, CR South’s first-year head coach. “She has had a tremendous start to the season, and we expect her to continue her senior year being our lead off and creating havoc on the bases.”

Woloshyn, who transferred from Notre Dame Academy in N.J., is batting.800 with nine runs scored and seven stolen bases in four games this season for the 4-0 Hawks.

“Helen is an unbelievable asset and we will continue to use her in her skill set that will let her be successful,” Molle said. “She is one of our leaders by example and her play on the field defines that.”

Boys Athlete of the Week: Joey Amati, Holy Ghost

The senior first baseman started his season with bang. In a win against Dock Mennonite, Amati blasted two home runs, going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and one walk.

For the season, Amati leads the Firebirds with seven RBIs in six games, and is batting .353.

“Joey is an exceptional leader and could not be more deserving (of recognition),” said head coach Greg Olenski. “We expect big things from him this season.”
