Ava Burke voted North Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18

After four days of voting, Pascack Valley junior forward Ava Burke was selected as the North Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Week.

In a 3-0 week, Burke averaged a double-double: 23.0 points and 19.0 rebounds. Included in the stretch was a career day against West Milford, in which she scored 31 points, pulled down 23 rebounds, made 2 three-pointers and went 5-for-7 (71 percent) at the foul line in a 72-49 Panther victory.

Here were the other nominees:

Julianna Almeida

Saddle River Day senior guard

Almeida helped the Rebels successfully defend their Bergen County championship yet again, making two clutch free throws to put the finishing touches on a 50-47 win over Teaneck in the final. In two games, the Navy commit went 6-for-6 at the line and averaged 18 points, 17 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

Christina Briguglio

Clifton sophomore

The Mustangs won more games during a 3-0 week than they did during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons combined. Briguglio was the top scorer with 23 points and had her best day of the season to cap the streak against St. Mary: 14 points and 6-of-6 free throws (she shot 70 percent from the line on the week).

Celina Bussanich

Pascack Valley junior guard

In a rare feat, the Panthers warranted two Player of the Week nominees, as Bussanich became the 21st player to join the Long Gold Line 1,000-point club. She did so by scoring 23 against West Milford, raising her total to 1,004 and capping a week in which she averaged 21.7 points and made 8 threes.

Siena Shuster

Wayne Hills senior forward

Shuster led the Passaic County champions in scoring (16.5 average) and rebounding (21.0) during the tournament’s final four. She followed up a 17-point, 25-board semifinal performance against DePaul with 16 and 17 in Saturday’s final against Eastside, leading her team to its first title since 1982.

Mackenzie Vellis

Rutherford sophomore guard

The Bulldogs captured the Bergen Invitational Tournament title over Westwood, 42-35, and ran their winning streak to nine. Vellis contributed 30 points in two games during the week, leading her team in the BIT final with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and a three-pointer.
