Ben Nelken voted North Jersey Boys Track Performer of the Week for May 1-7
After four days of voting, Clifton senior sprinter Ben Nelken was selected as the North Jersey Boys Track Performer of the Week.
The quintessential sprinter, Nelken won the 100 and 200 and ran a leg on Clifton's third place 4-x-400 team at the Big North Liberty championships.
Here were the other nominees:
Caden DeRosa
Hasbrouck Heights senior hurdler/jumper/sprinter
DeRosa was the top performer at the NJIC American division meet leading the Aviators to an 12th straight NJIC win by winning the 100 hurdles, the 400 hurdles, and the high jump and running a leg on the second place 4-x-400 team.
Lucas Genuario
Eastern Christian junior jumper/thrower/sprinter
She showed his versatility at the NJIC Colonial meet, winning the long jump, 200 and the javelin and running anchor on the Crusaders' winning 4-x-400 team.
Bobby Mays
Don Bosco junior hurdler/jumper
The ironmen appear to be on their way back to contention and Mays is leading the way. He won the high jump, long jump and triple jump and took third in the 110 hurdles at the Big North United meet and set four personal bests.
Christian Mercado
Wayne Vallley senior jumper/sprinter
Wayne Valley came within 2 1/2 points of the Big North Independence meet title and Mercado was a significant reason why. He won the high, long and triple jumps handily and ran a leg on the Indians' second place 4-x-400 team.
Tadael Mihret
Rutherford senior distance runner
He seems never to have a bad race and he led the Bulldogs to the NJIC National title, winning the 1,600 and 3,200 races and taking a close second in the 800.
Liam Paneque
Demarest sophomore hurdler/jumper
What will he do next? Already one of the top long jumpers in the state, Paneque high jumped a personal best 6-3 and two weeks after he started triple jumping, leaped a North Jersey leading 45-7 1/2 to win all three events at the Big North National meet.
Thomas Rogers
Bergen Catholic senior distance runner
After battling injuries throughout his high school career, Rogers appears fit and fully healthy and showed it with impressive personal bests of 4:26.40 for the 1,600 and 9:39.45 in the 3,200, winning both events at the Big North United meet.
Victor Souza
Ridgewood junior hurdler/jumper
The latest in a long line of talented Maroon hurdlers, Souza won both the 110 and 400 hurdles races and added a personal best in the long jump for fourth place at the Big North Freedom division meet.
