Campo Verde, Millennium students voted The Republic's High School Athletes of the Week

Gilbert Campo Verde track and field athlete Brooklyn Montgomery and Goodyear Millennium track and field's Diego Aguirre-Stewart have been chosen as this week's Arizona Republic high school athletes of the week, in weekly polls posted on April 23, sponsored by Diamond Kitchen & Bath and posted on azcentral.com.

Montgomery was nominated after she threw a personal best of 156-6 feet in the discus at the True Grit Invite, which is the No. 5 all-time mark in state history.

Also nominated were Gilbert Highland track and field athlete Camryn Delancey, who ran 5:02.14 to win the 1,600 meters at the True Grit Invite to set a new state lead in the event for the season; and Tucson Canyon del Oro softball player Taya Kelly, who went 6-for-11 with 3 doubles, a home run and 7 RBIs as the Dorados went undefeated against Sahuarita Walden Grove, Tucson Sahuaro, Tucson Rincon University and Tucson Salpointe Catholic.

In the boys poll, Aguirre-Stewart was nominated after he ran a wind-aided time of 10.39 seconds in the 100 meters at the Agua Fria district meet to set an all-conditions new state lead.

Also nominated were Tucson Desert Christian baseball player Bennett Vondrak, Tucson Desert Christian, who pitched a complete-game 4-0 shutout against San Manuel for the 1A South Region title, striking out 17, a single-game school record, while also setting a state record for RBIs in a game with nine against Patagonia; and Phoenix Desert Vista track and field athlete Lucas Schiermeyer, who threw a personal best of 185-9 in the javelin at Southwest Javelin Showcase to move up to the No. 2 in the state for the event.

Nominees are based on performances in AIA-sanctioned sports. Polls are posted on Monday and voting closes at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Results are announced the next day on azcentral.com and in The Arizona Republic on Friday. Nominees are chosen by Republic sports staff, with input from coaches and readers.
