What Jerry Stackhouse said about adding Brad Calipari to Vanderbilt basketball staff

Vanderbilt basketball has officially hired Brad Calipari as director of on-court player development, the program announced in a release Monday.

Calipari, the son of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, was a player and graduate assistant with the Wildcats and the Director of Player Development for Long Island University.

“Brad is a talented, young coach who has worked hard to prepare himself for this opportunity,” Vanderbilt coach Jerry Stackhouse said in a statement. “He is knowledgeable, high-energy, and a strong communicator. We are very excited about his ability to add value with our student-athletes and within our coaching staff.”

Vanderbilt advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT under Stackhouse for the second straight year before falling to UAB. The Commodores defeated Kentucky twice, once at Rupp Arena and once in the SEC Tournament, with the former being Vanderbilt's first road win over the Wildcats since 2007.

NCAA basketball teams are allowed to have three assistant coaches who can participate in coaching and off-campus recruiting as well as two additional assistant coaches who may not recruit off-campus. Vanderbilt already has three assistant coaches listed in Andy Fox, Anthony Wilkins and James Strong.
