UT sweeps doubleheader, series from Tech

McKenzie Parker and Mia Scott each hit a three-run homer and No. 17 Texas run-ruled Texas Tech 11-1 in five innings Saturday in the first game of a Big 12 softball doubleheader at Rocky Johnson Field.

The Longhorns swept the twin bill and the series with a 7-6 victory in the finale, getting a go-ahead two-run double from Mary Iakopo in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth.

Tech finished the regular season 22-26 and 5-13 in the Big 12. Texas (35-15-1, 10-5) has a series left next weekend with Baylor.

Parker's shot came three batters into the game after Janae Jefferson singled and Scott walked in front of her. Later in the inning, Alyssa Washington had a run-scoring groundout and Courtney Day unloaded a solo homer that made the score 5-0.

Scott's homer and Katie Cimusz's RBI double gave Texas a 10-1 lead in the fourth inning.

Peyton Blythe homered for Tech, and Molly Grumbo and Riley Love had the only other hits off UT pitchers Sophia Simpson (7-4) and Logan Hulon.

Erna Carlin (7-7), lifted after four batters in the first inning, took the loss.

In the finale, Maddie Westmoreland's two-run homer gave Tech a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Texas went ahead 7-3, Abbie Orrick hit a three-run shot for the Red Raiders in the seventh.

Tech starter Olivia Rains (1-8) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings. Texas' Hailey Dolcini (16-7) got the win with 4 1/3 innings of relief, and Simpson got the last two outs for her first save.

The two teams originally were scheduled to play one game Saturday and the series finale Sunday, but the two games were rescheduled as a Saturday doubleheader because of a forecast for rain on Sunday afternoon.
