Upcoming Itasca Waters' Water Wisdom events to focus on keeping water clean

Jan. 22—GRAND RAPIDS — Itasca Waters will continue its online Practical Water Wisdom Series at noon on Thursday, Feb. 1.

The series runs for an hour beginning at noon, typically on the first Thursday of each month. The webinars are free, open to all and include an interactive Q&A session.

The first program to kick off the 2024 season will be "The value of wetlands and the regulations that protect them" presented by Jennie Skancke, Wetlands Program Consultant, Division of Ecological and Water Resources, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; and David Demmer, Wetland Specialist, Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. The talk will review what wetlands are, what is different about those in northern Minnesota, why do we want and need them and how can we prevent damage to them with regulations, a release said.

For the remaining monthly topics, attendees will learn about living on lakes with AIS, state fish management strategies including stocking, loons and wildlife related boating regulations, mining impacts to water quality, wild rice growth and cultural importance, the changing water quality in our lakes, forever chemicals and human impacts, and salt-free water softeners.

"Attendees will take away tips and strategies for maintaining the wonderful water resources we have in Minnesota," the release said. "Every action we take can add up to a big win for clean water."

The Practical Water Wisdom series is the brainchild of Itasca Waters, a nonprofit organization located in Itasca County whose mission is to team up with other organizations and concerned citizens to maintain abundant, clean water for continued health, enjoyment and a strong economy.
