The Daily Reporter readers have spoken as we honor yet another high school athlete for their work in the world of sports in and around Branch County with The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week as sponsored by ProMedia Coldwater Regional Hospital, Omega Physical Therapy and Coldwater Chiropractic and Wellness Center.

This week’s honoree comes to us from the world of Union City softball as senior third baseman Mara Bailey ran away with the vote to earn The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week honors. Bailey received more than 51% of the vote in the largest voter turnout this spring season to earn the honor this week.   Bailey was honored after a very busy week on the diamond for Union City softball, a week that brought a stat line that saw the gritty senior finish a four-game stretch going 8 for 12 with four doubles, four singles, 5 RBIs and six runs scored. Bailey, a senior, included in that week a 7 for 7 effort in a two game doubleheader versus Waldron, finishing the day with three doubles, four singles, four RBIs and five runs scored.

Bailey has been a key part to the resurgent Union City softball team and will continue to hold a place right in the middle of the Chargers lineup this season.

Finishing in second place in this week’s voting was Quincy freshman track star Brookelyn Parker.

Parker put together a big week of action on the track for her Orioles as she swept both hurdle events in early week action during the Orioles battle versus Homer and Bronson, winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.90 seconds followed by a win in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 51.84 seconds. Parker was also a member of the runner-up 1600-meter relay team. Parker ended the week with a pair of gold medals won at the Comstock Invite, once again sweeping the hurdle events. Parker won the 100-meter hurdles in a personal best time of 17.58 seconds while also winning the 300-meter hurdles in a personal best time of 51.20 seconds. Parker was also a part of the third place 1600-meter relay team at the event.

Also earning votes in this week’s poll for Athlete of the Week were Coldwater track and field star Grace Huff; Tekonsha track star Wyatt Blashfield; Quincy golfer Sam Sawyer; Union City’ baseball’s Phoenix Elkins; Bronson softball’s Brealyn Lasky; and Coldwater softball’s Alexis Bills.

Congratulations goes out once again to this week’s The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week as sponsored by ProMedia Coldwater Regional Hospital, Omega Physical Therapy and Coldwater Chiropractic and Wellness Center, Union City softball senior Mara Bailey.

Congratulations Mara!
