Two-alarm fire in Milford causes $100K in damages; no injuries reported

MILFORD — A two-alarm fire destroyed the second floor of a three-family building Sunday afternoon on 31 North Bow St., making it uninhabitable, according to Fire Chief Mark Nelson.

No injuries were reported, but interior damages are estimated at about $100,000 across all three floors, said Nelson Monday.

The fire, water and firefighters' efforts to ensure complete control of the fire attributed to the estimation, he said.

"(Once) the fire is extinguished, now you have to open up all the walls to make sure it's not traveling to other places," Nelson explained. "Some water damage was reported on the first floor and into the basement, and also damage on the third floor because we had to open up all the lower walls to make sure the fire wasn't traveling onto the third floor."

When the fire was reported at 12:48 p.m., three of the building's eight residents were initially unaccounted for, prompting fire officials to call a second alarm in case additional help was needed.

No one was found inside after an extensive search by Milford firefighters, according to Nelson.

The fire was put out within 15 to 20 minutes, thanks to the efforts of the eight on-duty Milford firefighters who responded, the chief said.

Off-duty personnel and firefighters from Hopedale, Hopkinton, Franklin and Bellingham also responded, but were quickly dismissed while the Medway Fire Department covered the unattended Milford station, said Nelson.

He said the cause of the fire was an "unspecified electrical event" that was unintentional.
