Transfer portal to gain 2 more Texas Tech basketball players, per reports

It appears Devan Cambridge has changed his mind.

Two more Texas Tech basketball players are reportedly headed to the transfer portal with Cambridge being the most notable names on Tuesday. Joe Tipton of On3 reported Cambridge's decision to go to the portal, citing Cambridge himself with the information.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that reserve guard D'Maurian Williams is also headed to the portal.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, neither player was officially in the transfer portal, according to a Texas Tech spokesperson.

Cambridge started all eight games he suited up for the Red Raiders before suffering a season-ending knee injury in December. In his short time on the floor, he averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in about 26 minutes of action per contest.

Williams has spent the last two years with Texas Tech after transferring from Gardner-Webb, where he spent two years. Williams played a total of 19 minutes for the Red Raiders this season.

Cambridge's reported departure is notable because he told the Avalanche-Journal in February that he fully intended on returning to Texas Tech next year. He would've needed to be granted a medical hardship waiver for his sixth year of eligibility, which he is expected to be approved for.

In the sit-down with the A-J, Cambridge said he didn't want to start over somewhere else for his final year of eligibility.

"For sure," he said in the Feb. 26 interview. "No doubt in my mind."

Cambridge spent three years at Auburn and one year at Arizona State before joining the Red Raiders last July. Before that, Cambridge had posted on Instagram that he wanted to "run it back" with the Sun Devils before entering his name into the portal. He initially committed to Oregon before finding his way to Lubbock.

As of Tuesday night, just six of the original 14 members of Grant McCasland's inaugural squad are slated to return for the 2024-25 campaign: Darrion Williams, Chance McMillian, Kerwin Walton, Lamar Washington, Eemeli Yalaho and Jack Francis. Williams and Walton were regular starters throughout the year with McMillian being the sixth man.

Players are able to enter the transfer portal through May 1.
