Track: Coldwater split I-8 double dual, falling to Parma but downing Northwest

JACKSON, MI. - The Coldwater Cardinal track and field program traveled to Parma Western High School on Monday for Interstate 8 double dual meet action, as the Cardinals took on both the Panthers of Parma Western and the Mounties of Jackson Northwest.

Parma Western was able to secure the sweep in both the men’s and women’s portion of the competition, while Coldwater finished 1-1 on both sides of the event.

In the men’s portion of the double dual, it was Parma Western finishing 2-0, defeating Coldwater by the score of 125-37 while also taking down Northwest by the score of 145.33-16.66. Coldwater defeated Northwest in the other dual, winning by the score of 112.5-44.5.

The Coldwater effort was paced by two individual event winners and another relay event victory.

Taking individual wins for Coldwater was a pair of seniors, one in the running events and one in the field events. Taking a win in the running event was long distance ace Haroon Omar who took home the win in the 3200-meter run in a time of 10 minutes, 44.54 seconds while earning a victory in his chosen field event was Hunter Munson who won the pole vault with a vault of 12 feet, 6 inches.   Bringing home a relay win for the Cardinals was the 3200-relay team of Sam Pernia, Sebastian Ocampo, Claudel Wischmeyer, and Haroon Omar in a time of 8 minutes, 57.38 seconds.

Helping the Coldwater effort with a top four individual finish on the day was Naseem Taha, third place in the 100 and third place in the 200; Phanom Dompierre, fourth place in the 200; Sam Pernia, third place in the 800 and second place in the 1600; Kendall Austin, second place in the 110 hurdles and second place in the long jump; Jackson Reilly, fourth place in the shot put and fourth place in the discus; and Zach Coffing, third place in the discus.

Running well for Coldwater in the relay events was the 400-relay team of Austin, Kaden Lewis, Dompierre and Taha, second place; the 800-relay team of Dalton Coville, Lewis, Cameron Shilling, and Ayden Stepp, third place; and the 3200-relay team of Gabe Wagoner, Claudel Wischmeyer, Jackson Reilly, and Haroon Omar, third place. The 3200 “B” relay team of Laith Musa, Juan Pablo Ocampo, Sebastin Ocampo and Austin Accardi finished in fourth place overall.

On the women’s side of the day, it was Parma Western securing the sweep, defeating Coldwater 102-55 and Northwest 137-24. Coldwater finished 1-1, defeating the Mounties by the score of 114-30.

Coldwater’s effort was paced by five event wins, including a sweep of the throwing events by sophomore Elli Foley. Foley took first place in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 4.50 inches, her second foray into the 40-foot range, as well as a first place finish in the discus with a throw of 101 feet, 7 inches, a season best throw.

Also taking first place finishes for Coldwater was Jatziri Martinez with a victory in the 100 meter dash in a time of 13.41 seconds, a personal best time; Grace Huff with a win in the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 30.16 seconds; and Lainey Yearling with a win in the 1600-meter run in a time of 5 minutes, 40.49 seconds.

Pacing the Cardinal effort with a top four finish in their respective event was Jatziri Martinez, fourth place in the 200; Shakura Muqit, third place in the 400; Abigail Robison, fourth place in the 400; Madilyn Persails, second place in the 100 hurdles; Grace Riley, third place in the 100 hurdles; Ta’Vaiyah Hughes, third place in the 300 hurdles; Elizabeth Torres-Ojeda, fourth place in the 300 hurdles; Abigail Jones, fourth place in the shot put and third place in the discus; Heidi Katz, second place in the discus; Ilsa Katz, fourth place in the discus; Ta’Vaiyah Hughes, fourth place in the high jump and fourth place in the long jump; and Jaleah Sloan, second place in the long jump.

The Coldwater relay teams also did well in their respective races, led by the 400 relay team of Gracie Finn, Kendyll Szafranski, Riley Graham, and Jatziri Martinez, second place; the 800 relay team of Martinez, Finn, Abigail Robison, and Jaelah Sloan, second place; the 1600 relay team of Sloan, Robison, Lainey Yearling and Gracie Huff, second place; and the 3200 relay team of Eysha Chavez, Olivia Golematis, Halie McFarland, and Aroa Ramos, second place.

The Coldwater Cardinal varsity track and field team will next look towards the MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) postseason as they will next see action Friday when they head to Mason High School for the Division Two Regional Invitational followed by the Interstate 8 League Championship to be held at Albion College on May 23.
