Top 10 Arizona Republic high school wrestlers from biggest weekend tournaments

Some of the biggest invitationals were held last weekend. Here are The Arizona Republic's Top 10 high school boys' and girls' wrestlers who emerged victorious. Coaches nominated them.

Top 10 wrestlers from invitationals

1. A.J. Lopez, Ironwood, So.

He was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Peoria Tournament of Champions, which is considered tougher than state. He won the 126-pound division. He is 30-2 on the year. He also was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Moon Valley tournament. He finished third in the state as a freshman.

2. Sergio Vega, Tucson Sunnyside, Jr.

He led the Sunnyside powerhouse to the Peoria Tournament of Champions boys championship, winning the 144-pound class, improving to 97-0 in his career. He won all five matches at Peoria.

3. Tristan Bacon, Raymond S Kellis, Jr.

He won the 215-pound weight class at the Peoria Tournament of Champions, improving his overall record to 30-4. A top football player, he dominated his final match with a second-period pin. He has placed in every tournament he has entered this year. He was second at the Jerry Benson Inviational, fourth at the Jimmy Hamada Invitational in Carlsbad, California, and second at the Moon Valley tournament. He finished fifth last year at state at 190 pounds, so he is emerging as a potential state finalist.

4. Daniel Alire, Kofa, Jr.

He went 5-0 and won the 106-pound division at the Peoria Tournament of Champions. He is 26-3 on the season.

5. Altagracia Wix, Marcos de Niza, So.

She pinned her way through the first girls Peoria Tournament of Champions. She won all five matches by falls, taking the 126-pound title. Her record is 9-1.

6. Nick Hutchins, Arizona College Prep

He was named the Heavyweight Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 285-pound title in the Central Arizona Classic at Poston Butte.

7. Shevy Landis-Ku, Poston Butte

He was the Lightweight Outstanding Wrestler at the Central Arizona Classic, winning at 126 pounds.

8. Ian Grubbs, Cactus Shadows

He won the 150-pound title at Poston Butte and was named the Middleweight Outstanding Wrestler.

9. Jamie Laswell, Cesar Chavez, Sr.

She won the Peoria meet, remaining undefeated on the season, and beating the returning state champion in her weight class. Her win in the finals pushed the girls team to a runner-up finish.

10. Pablo Macias, Ironwood, Sr.

The two-time state champion won the 157-pound division at Peoria. He also took the Moon Valley and Liberty tournament titles this season. He is the top wrestler in the state in his weight class.
