Is it time for Hall of Fame broadcaster Al Michaels to retire? Here are some Dolphins-Jets gaffes

Let's get this out there at the top of the broadcast — I've always thought Al Michaels was the best play-by-play announcer of his generation. "Do you believe in miracles?" forever will be the greatest line uttered by someone calling a game. But that comment came in 1980 as the United States hockey team stunned the Soviet Union and the rest of the world at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Michaels, 78, has been the voice of numerous sports events during the last five decades, has done play-by-play for Super Bowls, World Series, NBA championships and the Stanley Cup, and always has been at the top of his game. But last Friday's Dolphins-Jets game became a dark experience for those watching on Amazon Prime, and we're not just talking Black Friday somebody took the last large-screen TV experience.Michaels — and perhaps even those in the TV production truck — looked worse than the Jets offense at times. Here are a few examples of those fumbles:

Who is that getting the football after Tyreek Hill's TD catch?

One of the cardinal sins of any TV sports broadcast is not doing your homework. Considering Tyreek Hill's various post-TD celebrations this season, that should have been an obvious one.

But after his touchdown gave the Dolphins a 10-0 lead in the second quarter, Hill ran to the stands behind the end zone and handed the ball to a woman in the front row. While Michaels was befuddled as to the identity of the woman (and no one in the production truck knew either), everyone watching in South Florida certainly recognized his wife, Keeta Vaccaro.Michaels finally identified her but certainly should have been flagged for a delay-of-ID penalty.

Tell me another story Grandpa Michaels

All play-by-play announcers have a plethora of stories to tell, especially during long lulls in baseball games. And Michaels cut his teeth announcing Cincinnati Reds games before going national.

But Michaels told numerous rambling stories during last week's game, including one about how Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel met his future wife. It turns out the story was a bit off, but that was not the only one that viewers had to be scratching their heads over. Granted, Friday's game dragged at times so the announcers had to fill the air with something, and Michaels had his good moments. But Michaels started reciting lists of his most famous broadcasts through the years. There were times color analyst Kirk Herbstreit didn't know what to say after one of those tales. Perhaps, he should have held up a copy of Michaels' book, You Can’t Make This Up: Miracles, Memories, and the Perfect Marriage of Sports and Television, which contains many of those stories.

Jevon Holland's 99-yard Pick-Six just another day

Yes, Michaels called the incredible interception return for a TD "as crazy as anything you'll ever see." But many listeners were amazed that the guy who called that hockey upset many years ago did not elaborate on a rare end zone to end zone Pick Six.According to NextGen stats, "Holland traveled 124.4 yards on the play, the most distance traveled by a ball carrier on a scrimmage play this season."

McDaniel said the interception and return was "very reminiscent of Ed Reed," the Hall of Fame safety. But it pretty much earned a yawn from the broadcast booth.

Jersey Mike's has nothing to worry about

We all remember when CBS and then FOX trotted out those ridiculous six-legged turkeys when John Madden was the color analyst for the annual Lions or Cowboys games on Thanksgiving. Amazon tried its own version of a mad meal with David Chang's "Black Friday Leftover Sandwich," a ridiculous amount of food stuffed inside two slices of bread. Chang, who founded the Momofuku restaurant group, explained the sandwich this way: "I'm going to attempt to put as many leftovers packed into the sandwich as possible while you are still physically able to hold it and take a bite into it."

However, when Chang presented Michaels and Herbstreit with the sandwich, Michaels appeared as if he was going to throw up and insisted he was not going to take a bite. Michaels apparently hates veggies, but he could have faked it for the cameras. At least when Hill and defensive lineman Christian Wilkins were presented their sandwiches during the post-game interviews, they took big bites and gave a thumbs up to Chang. Wilkins even attempted to take the entire tray of sandwiches to the Miami locker room before he was told it had to stay on the set.

It's time to bury that sandwich — give me turkey, a slice of Swiss cheese, lettuce and mayo on two slices of white bread - and it's time for Al Michaels to retire. I have so much respect for Michaels that I do not want him shown the exit as happened to so many sports announcers and analysts before him. I still recall Curt Gowdy's fumbling names in the latter stage of his career — who can ever forget "Sanny Manguillen?"

Michaels should do us a favor and announce he's putting away his microphone at the end of the NFL season — and look back on a Hall of Fame career with pride.
