Millwood 34, Chisholm 16

Three takeaways from Millwood’s 34-16 win over Class 2A rival Chisholm on Friday night.

Player of the game: Lemar Davis. The sophomore running back rushed 14 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns including a 73-yard touchdown run on Millwood’s second play from scrimmage. He also added 26 receiving yards in the victory to help the Falcons improve to 4-1 on the year.

Key moment: Davis got loose for a 52-yard touchdown run at the start of the fourth quarter after a Chisholm touchdown brought the game within two scores. The explosive run slammed the door on any potential fourth-quarter comeback from Chisolm and served as the final score.

Read option: The Falcons' secondary shut down Chisholm’s passing attack early on, intercepting four of Longhorns quarterback Kelson Hamilton’s passes in the first half. The Millwood defense forced two additional turnovers in the second half and held Longhorns dynamic running back Braden Flanagan in check to secure the victory.

Blanchard 28, Newcastle 13

Three takeaways from Class 4A No. 3 Blanchard's 28-13 win against Newcastle on Friday night:

Player of the game: Hudsen Periman. The Blanchard junior receiver made some big plays for the Lions (4-1, 2-0 District 4A-2). He finished with five catches for 122 yards and a touchdown. He also had an impressive snag in the back of the end zone on a two-point conversion.

Top moment: Senior linebacker Ben Heefner intercepted a pass in the third quarter that ended a Newcastle drive in Blanchard territory. Heefner raced to the sideline as he took off his helmet and got the Blanchard crowd going.

Read option: First loss for Newcastle. The Racers (4-1, 1-1) were perfect on the year heading into Friday, but Blanchard showed up ready to compete and played lockdown offense. But keep an eye on Newcastle as the season moves forward. District 4A-2 is solid with teams like Bethany, Blanchard and Tuttle, but the Racers were competitive Friday and had their moments.

Jones 32, Crossings Christian 10

Three takeaways from Class 2A fourth-ranked Jones' 32-10 home win over No. 9 Crossings Christian on Friday night.

Read option: Jones’ non-district scheduling philosophy continues to be rugged. Last year, the Longhorns were 0-3 in non-district play, then ran off 10 wins in a row and reached the 2A state semifinals. This season, non-district defeats to 3A No. 1 Lincoln Christian and 2A No. 1 Washington left the Longhorns with a 1-2 mark before beginning the District 2 slate with two wins by a combined margin of 72-10.

Key moment: Trailing, 8-0, Crossings Christian appeared to grab some momentum late in the first quarter when defensive back Evan Crotts collected the first of his two second-half interceptions. Crotts was ruled down at the Knights 2-yard line, which put their offense in a difficult spot. Crossings Christian was unable to get past its own 4-yard line and was forced to punt, which gave Jones the ball at its own 49. It took just one play for the Longhorns to cash in as UCO commit Clayton Creasey hit receiver Braydon Scott for a 51-yard touchdown and a 16-0 lead that never got back within single digits.

Player of the game: Jones sophomore linebacker Luke DeBusk and junior linebacker/safety Mason Templeton. Crossing Christian entered the District 2 tilt with an unblemished record, thanks to a rushing attack that averaged over 210 yards per game. Against Jones, the Knights managed just 74 yards on the ground and were held to 10 points by a Longhorns’ defensive effort that was spearheaded by DeBusk and Templeton.

Guthrie 35, Piedmont 0

Three takeaways from Class 5A third-ranked Guthrie’s 35-0 home win over sixth-ranked Piedmont on Friday night:

Player of the game: Nate Benford. Guthrie put on a display of sheer defensive dominance, and senior defensive back Benford led the way with two interceptions. His first pick led to Dae’Lontae Glover’s 3-yard touchdown run.

Top moment: After Tariq Watson opened the game with a kickoff return to set Guthrie up on Piedmont’s 33-yard line, senior running back Jaylen Harper weaved into the end zone on the first play of the drive. That high-octane sequence set the tone for the Bluejays’ shutout win.

Read option: At halftime, members of Guthrie’s 2013 football team gathered on the field as the crowd celebrated the 10th anniversary of their state championship. The 2013 Bluejays brought the program its fourth – and most recent – state title, along with its third undefeated season.

Read Option: The Falcons secondary shut down Chisholm’s passing attack early on, intercepting four of Longhorns quarterback Kelson Hamilton’s passes in the first half. The Millwood defense forced two additional turnovers in the second half and held Longhorns dynamic running back Braden Flanagan in check to secure the victory.

Carl Albert 70, Shawnee 0

Three takeaways from Class 5A top-ranked Carl Albert’s 70-0 road win over unranked Shawnee on Thursday night:

Player of the game: Kevin Sperry. The junior quarterback laid a solid foundation for the lopsided win, so he retired to the bench in the third quarter. Sperry, an OU commit, completed eight of 14 pass attempts for 128 yards and a touchdown. He also tallied five carries for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 59-yard dash into the end zone to open the second quarter.

Top moment: Trystan Haynes showed why he gives the Titans an advantage on special teams. He took off for an 82-yard punt return touchdown that extended Carl Albert’s lead to 41-0 with 6:52 left in the second quarter.

Read option: Thursday marked the first matchup between Jason Madonna and Mike Dunn as head coaches. Madonna, Shawnee’s first-year head coach, played high school football alongside Dunn at Carl Albert. The Carl Albert alumni trio of Dunn, Madonna and Robert Jones formerly coached together at Del City, where Jones is now the head coach.

Madonna’s takeaway on Dunn’s Carl Albert team?: “They’re probably better than they were last year. There’s a future OU team on that sideline.”

Bixby's Clay Peters carries the ball during a high school football game between Southmoore and Bixby in Moore, Okla., Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023.

Three takeaways from Class 6A-I No. 1 Bixby’s 66-0 rout of Southmoore in a District 1 game Thursday night in Moore.

Read option: Despite the graduation losses of its quarterback, tailback, tight end and two receivers, the Bixby offense is still humming. The Class 6A-I top-ranked Spartans (5-0, 2-0 District 2) have scored a whopping 304 points through five games and are keeping the opposing defenses off balance with a dizzying array of formations and substitutions, all within the scope of a hurry-up, up-tempo attack. Sophomore quarterback Carson Kirby has thrown for 772 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, while change-of-pace senior Clay Peters is completing 86 percent of his passes with four scores. Sophomore tight end Cord Nolan – the heir apparent to University of Arkansas freshman Luke Hasz – has collected 10 receptions for 267 yards this season, an average of 26.7 yards per catch with a team-high four TD receptions.

Key moment: When Bixby successfully negotiated the two-hour drive from its campus to Moore Schools Stadium and went through pregame warmups without injury, one had to assume that it was going to be a long night for Southmoore. The Class 6A-I top-ranked Spartans – the five-time defending state champions – piled up 31 first-quarter points and led at halftime, 52-0. Both coaches agreed to a continuous clock in the second half.

Player of the game: Bixby sophomore quarterback Carson Kirby and senior quarterback Clay Peters. After the graduation loss of Carson’s older brother Connor, the Spartans are utilizing both Carson Kirby and Peters under center this year. Against Southmoore, Kirby threw for 111 yards and three touchdowns, while Peters was a perfect 6-for-6 passing for 55 yards and a score.
