Thirteen of top 25 counties with disaster declarations were in FL: See where Volusia ranks

For several years, hurricanes, wildfires, and other natural disasters have been occurring with greater frequency and intensity.

As a result, the cost of human life and the price of recovery and rebuilding has gone up, as has the need to contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

An analysis by Forbes Advisor of FEMA disaster declarations for the 200 most-populated counties showed 13 of the top 25 most disaster-prone counties are located in Florida, including Duval and Volusia counties.

Here are those 13 Florida counties and how they ranked in the top 25:

  • Duval (tied for 9th place)

  • Manatee (tied for 9th place)

  • Miami-Dade (tied for 13th place)

  • Broward (tied for 13th place)

  • Palm Beach (tied for 13th place)

  • Hillsborough (tied for 13th place)

  • Pinellas (tied for 13th place)

  • Brevard (tied for 13th place)

  • Pasco (tied for 13th place)

  • Volusia (tied for 13th place)

  • Seminole (tied for 13th place)

  • Osceola (tied for 13th place)

  • Marion (tied for 13th place)

Over the past decade, federal disasters were declared a dozen times in both Duval and Manatee counties. During the same time period, the other Florida counties that ranked in the top 25 each saw 11 federal disasters declared thanks to hurricanes.

Flagler County is not in the top 25 list.

No. 1 overall was Los Angeles (wildfires) followed by East Baton Rouge Parish, LA, and Orleans Parish, LA (tied for second); and Riverside County, CA, and Jefferson Parish, LA (tied for fourth).
