Texas Tech track and field entrants set for NCAA championships

The Texas Tech track and field team has 11 men and six women who have been accepted into the NCAA indoor championships next week in Boston.

Tech's Caleb Dean qualified in three events, and Terrence Jones, Antoine Andrews, Shawn Brown and Shaemar Uter qualified in two events apiece. Others who made the cut are Don'Dre Swint, Omamuyovwi Erhire, Jacob Mechler, Kaithon McDonald, Josh Bour and Carl Hicks.

For the Tech women, sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma qualified in two events. Alyssa Colbert, Success Umukoro, Temitope Adeshina, Ruta Lasmane and Anne-Suzanna Foster-Katta are Tech's other qualifiers.

The Tech men are ranked No. 1 and the women No. 9 in this week's rankings index by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The NCAA championships are scheduled for March 7-9 in Boston.

On Saturday, the Tech men won the Big 12 team title for the second year in a row and the fourth time in seven years while the Tech women finished second.

In addition to Tech's contingent for Boston, at least seven former South Plains College athletes qualified for the NCAA championships. On the men's side, those are Alabama's Khaleb McRae and Chris Robinson in the 400 meters and on the Crimson Tide's 1,600-meter relay; Arkansas' Romaine Beckford in the high jump; South Florida's Shevoie Reid in the 200 meters; Oklahoma State's Mehdi Yanouri on the distance medley relay; and Texas A&M's Kimar Farquharson on the 1,600-meter relay.

On the women's side, SPC ex Joniar Thomas with Texas A&M qualified in the long jump.
