TCT sports round-up: Ballard, Collins-Maxwell baseball teams each have a strong week

The Class 3A No. 8 Ballard baseball team defeated Winterset (13-2), South Hamilton (11-4), Gilbert (5-4) and Carroll (12-3) this past week to run its winning streak to five games before suffering its first Raccoon River Conference loss at Adel-Desoto-Minburn Friday (3-2).

The Bombers fell to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the RRC following the ADM game.

The Ballard softball team went to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the RRC after losing at Winterset (3-1), hammering South Hamilton (10-3), falling at home to Gilbert (11-3) and crushing Carroll on the road (10-1).

The Class 1A No. 11 Collins-Maxwell softball team suffered its first four losses of the season in going to 11-4 overall and 9-1 in the Iowa Star Conference.

The Spartans hammered Colo-NESCO (17-0), fell at Roland-Story (9-6), lost at home to Clarksville (4-1), blanked BCLUW (5-0) and then topped Denison-Schleswig (4-0) and suffered losses to Carroll and MVAOCOU by 1-0 and 11-6 scores at the OABCIG Tournament Friday and Saturday. Collins-Maxwell dropped to 11-4 on the season and 9-1 in the ISC.

The Collins-Maxwell baseball team went to 9-5 overall and remained atop the ISC with an 8-2 record after winning at Colo-NESCO (12-1), crushing Clarksville at home (12-2), losing at Grand View Christian (10-1) then defeating BCLUW at home (13-1).

Here is what we learned from this past week of Ballard and Collins-Maxwell high school sports competition.

Ballard baseball team is impressive during the week

The Ballard baseball team turned in an impressive showing during the past week of competition.

In the victory over Winterset the Bombers plated six runs in the second inning to take control. Ballard had 13 hits and only gave up four.

Jaden Peasley went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, Eli Rouse doubled twice and finished with two runs and RBIs apiece and Trent Payne and Jaren Njos each chipped in two RBIs. Jacob Luster was 2-for-4 with a double and one run and RBI apiece.

Rouse was the winning pitcher. He allowed two earned runs on just two hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in four innings.

Five-run fourth and sixth innings powered Ballard past South Hamilton in six innings.

Peasley was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, Chance Lande doubled and drove in two runs, Payne knocked in a pair of runs, Cole Heinen doubled and picked up one RBI, Luster was 1-for-3 with two runs and Nicolas Schonhorst also scored twice. Owen Greco got the win after giving up two earned runs on six hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts in six innings.

Ballard rallied past Gilbert with a four-run seventh inning. Peasley got the win against the Tigers after going the distance and surrendering three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Rouse was 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI versus Gilbert. Luster was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Schonhorst drove in the winning and ended up 1-for-3 with a run and RBI apiece, Njos and Jakson Fleischmann both singled and scored and Beau Warg had a pinch-hit RBI single.

Ballard took control against Carroll with three runs in the second inning. The Bombers scored two more times in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh to blow the game open.

Greco was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, Luster 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Njos 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Schonhorst 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Rouse went 2-for-4 with one run and Lande singled and scored.

Schonhorst went 4 1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts as the winning pitcher versus Carroll.

The Bombers jumped out to a 2-1 lead against ADM only to give up two unanswered runs in the fifth inning.

Ballard had seven hits in a losing effort. Lande finished 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI, Schonhorst hit a double, Fleischmann singled and drove in a run and Luster singled and scored.

Miles Mudd took the loss against ADM. Mudd gave up two earned runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Ballard softball gets bats going versus South Hamilton and Carroll

The Ballard softball team gave 4A No. 8 Winterset a good fight before coming up short.

The Bombers' only run against the Huskies came in the seventh inning. Sam Vetter doubled and scored on a single from Halle Gardner.

Brooklyn Baumgardner, Avery Phillips and Kasey Larson each added a hit for the Bombers. Baumgardner took the loss after allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

In the win over South Hamilton the Bombers broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning.

Kayci Rigby was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs, Gardner 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Madeline Schonhorst 2-for-3 with two runs, Phillips 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Larson 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece. Lande went 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Maggie Mortensen finished 1-for-1 with three runs.

Gardner picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits and five walks with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Ballard fell behind 6-0 after three innings against Gilbert and could not recover.

Rigby doubled and drove in two runs, Larson went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Schonhorst finished 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Phillips singled and scored and Lande doubled twice against the Tigers. Baumgardner took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Ballard pounded out 16 hits in the victory over Carroll.

Baumgardner, Gardner, Lande and Vetter all had three hits versus Carroll. Baumgardner drove in three runs, Gardner picked up one RBI, Lande scored four times and drove in a run and Vetter scored three times. Kenna Zimmerman was 1-for-3 with two runs and Larson, Mortensen and Rigby each singled and drove in a run.

Baumgardner earned the win against Carroll with a dominant performance. She tossed a one-hitter and struck out 14 batters with only one walk.

Spartan softball team endures rough week

The Collins-Maxwell softball team had a tough go during the week.

The week started off strong with the Spartans hammering ISC rival Colo-NESCO. Erica Houge fired a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and she also drove in six runs after hitting one double, triple and home run apiece against the Royals.

Jayden Peters and Hannah Kimberley were both 3-for-3 against Colo-NESCO. Peters doubled, scored three times and drove in two runs and Kimberley scored twice and drove in a run.

In the loss to Roland-Story Peters was handed a defeat in her first start on the mound. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in six innings.

Houge went 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs and four RBIs against the Norse.

Collins-Maxwell was held to five hits in its loss to No. 10 Clarksville. Houge was the losing pitcher after surrendering two earned runs on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

The Spartans scored their only run in the sixth inning after falling behind 4-0. Houge singled, walked and scored, Emma Pasquariello picked up an RBI and Kimberley, Cypress Erickson, Marissa Boege and Vivian Kahler each chipped in with a single against the Indians.

In the home win over BCLUW Houge fired a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts. The Spartan offense supported her with one run in the first inning and four in the third.

Pasquariello went 3-for-3 with a double, run and two RBIs and Boege finished 2-for-4 with two runs against the Comets.

In the win over Denison-Schleswig at the OABCIG Tournament Houge got the victory and went 2-for-4 with two runs. Peters was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Pasquariello 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece.

Houge fired a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk in the loss to Carroll. The Tigers scored the game's only run in the second inning.

Boege doubled and Erickson, Pasquariello and Kimberley each singled once against Carroll.

In the loss to MVAOCOU, the Spartans could not withstand four run third and sixth innings by the Rams. Peters took the loss after allowing nine earned runs on 15 hits with two strikeouts.

Erickson, Kimberley and Boege each had two hits against MVAOCOU. Erickson tripled, scored three times and drove in a run, Kimberley picked up one run and RBI apiece and Boege knocked in two runs.

Collins-Maxwell baseball team keeps atop the ISC South

The Collins-Maxwell baseball team remained atop the ISC South Division with its three decisive wins during the week.

The Spartans had 10 hits and received great pitching from Cooper Wierson during their victory over Colo-NESCO. Wierson fired a four hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings to get the win.

Austin Boege was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and Reed Oswalt 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece against the Royals. Josef Dvorak doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs, Luke Huntrods was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs and Caden Hasbrouck doubled and scored twice.

In the victory over Clarksville Caleb Dvorak was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and Boege doubled and drove in three runs. Hasbrouck singled and knocked in two runs, Jace Huntrods singled, walked twice and scored three times, Oswalt went 2-for-3 with two runs and Wierson 1-for-4 with two runs.

Huntrods got the win after 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings with five strikeouts.

In the non-conference loss to GVC the Spartans were held to one run in the third inning. They finished with just four hits as Huntrods, Hasbrouck, Caleb Dvorak and Josef Dvorak each singled once.

Wierson scored the Spartan run on an RBI from Huntrods. Huntrods took the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Collins-Maxwell bounced back strong with its win over BCLUW. The Spartans scored 11 runs over the first two innings and coasted to victory in five innings.

Caleb Dvorak got the win versus the Comets after giving up one earned run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in five innings. Hasbrouck was 3-for-4 with three runs and RBIs to pace the Spartans on offense.

Josef Dvorak went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs, Caleb Dvorak finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Wierson finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run versus BCLUW.
