Sturgis cheer wins home invitational

STURGIS — The Sturgis varsity competitive cheer team won its invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Trojans piled up enough points to pick up first place at the event, one where head coach Stephanie Smith said she was proud of her team's efforts.

"I'm very proud of the girls, we made some last-minute changes and that didn't seem to bother us today," Smith said. "They all did a wonderful job today. I'm very proud of the whole Sturgis cheer program, I think we all did a great job today."

In addition to the Sturgis varsity, the junior varsity and middle school teams also competed. Visiting teams included Edwardsburg, Vicksburg and Bronson.

To claim the varsity win, Sturgis finished with 655.48 total points on the day. Finishing behind Sturgis was Edwardsburg in second with 608.9 points and Bronson with 552.3 points.

The Trojan junior varsity claimed victory as well. It finished with 530.8 total points.

Winning the middle school event was the Vicksburg "red" team, which totaled 373.3 points. Sturgis was second with 337.76, Vicksburg "white" had 285.1 and Edwardsburg finished with 280.92 total points.

Sturgis will host the varsity Wolverine Conference Championships coming up on Wednesday. Smith said the team is looking forward to the event, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

"It's a big one and we're excited," Smith said. "We are looking forward to a good showing."
