Student killed, New Mexico State basketball player hospitalized after shooting on UNM's campus

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police identified a University of New Mexico student who was killed in a Saturday shootout on campus with a New Mexico State University basketball player that prompted a basketball game between the two schools to be postponed.

New Mexico State Police identified the dead student as 19-year-old Brandon Travis. Police did not identify the New Mexico State University student in a news release. But the Las Cruces Sun-News, part of the USA TODAY Network, as well as ESPN and other outlets, reported the student is Mike Peake, a junior forward on the MSU basketball team.

Peake, who was shot during the incident, was transported to an area hospital.

As of Sunday he was listed in stable condition.

State police investigators believe Travis conspired with a 17-year-old girl and two male friends – all UNM students to lure Peake, 21, to campus and assault him.

Sometime around 3 a.m. near the Coronado Hall dorm on New Mexico's campus, Travis confronted Peake. According to investigators, Travis had a firearm and shot Peake. Peake also had a firearm and shot Travis, police say.

Travis was pronounced dead  at the scene.

The girl and two male friends fled after the shooting, according to police. The girl has since been arrested, booked into a detention center and charged with aggravated battery and conspiracy.

Police investigators say they've identified the two male friends and were working with the local district attorney to determine whether they should be charged. Police did not identify the girl.

The investigation  is ongoing, police say.

NMSP on Monday announced the arrest of 19-year-old Jonathan Smith in connection to shooting. Smith was charged with aggravated battery (third-degree felony), conspiracy to commit a felony, and two counts of tampering with evidence (fourth-degree felonies).

According to the arrest affidavit, Peake was seen on surveillance video walking with a female outside of Coronado Hall when three individuals approached Peake. One of the individuals pointed a firearm at Peake and another hit the basketball player on his right leg with a baseball bat. Peake began to run as the gun was fired at Peake "several times." The affidavit states that Peake pulled a firearm from his waist and fired back, hitting the gunman, Travis, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In interviews with police, the girl said she had been in contact with Peake for a while. The girl was friends with Travis, who, upon learning she was in contact with Peake, told the girl to set Peake up so his friends could jump him and she agreed. Travis wanted to jump Peake because, "Peake and his friends had beat him up badly at the UNM vs. NMSU homecoming (football) game in Las Cruces, New Mexico."

New Mexico State University Chancellor Dan E. Arvizu confirmed Sunday that "one of our student athletes is now in the hospital following an altercation on the UNM campus."

Peake is the New Mexico State basketball team's starting power forward and was in Albuquerque for a game against New Mexico that had been scheduled to tip off Saturday. The sold-out game was postponed following news of the shooting.

"Some of our athletics personnel stayed behind in Albuquerque to be with our student athlete,” Arvizu added in a letter to students, parents, employees, alumni and fans. “NMSU personnel have been in contact with investigators and have been cooperating with law enforcement throughout.”

Arvizu didn't identify the student-athlete and said “additional circumstances surrounding this incident are still being investigated” and it's important that “no one rush to judgment until all the facts are made available.”

Officer Ray Wilson, a New Mexico State Police spokesman, said officers stopped the Aggies’ team bus “as part of the ongoing investigation into the homicide” as the vehicle headed back to Las Cruces on Saturday afternoon.

The bus was later released without anyone aboard being detained, Wilson said.

“The entire Lobo community is shaken by this incident and we mourn the death of one of our students and the injuries sustained by another individual,” University of New Mexico President Garnett Stokes said in a statement. “I cannot express how deeply saddened I am by this tragedy on so many levels.”

The fatal shooting came six days after a former University of Virginia football player allegedly killed three Cavaliers football players and wounded two other students on the Charlottesville campus before being arrested.
