St. Paul Saints to give away $10,000 thanks to UMBC's upset win

Someone is about to make a lot of money after UMBC’s 20-point upset win against Virginia on Friday — and no, this has nothing to do with a bet made in Las Vegas.

The St. Paul Saints, a professional baseball team in St. Paul, Minnesota, announced on Twitter on Tuesday that it would give away $10,000 to one person if a No. 16 seed knocked off a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Normally those are great odds, as this feat has never happened in the Big Dance.

Yet the Retrievers became the first 16 seed to beat a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, so the Saints have to pay up.

“Someone on our staff, who shall remain nameless, brought this idea to me and said it was a foolproof promotion,” Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Derek Sharrer said in a release. “Now, thanks to this former staff member, I mean creative genius, we are going to make someone’s day by giving them $10,000. We’re all about family affordable fun with the Saints and the winner will be able to bring a lot of families to CHS Field this season.”

The Saints will hold a live drawing on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET to select the winner of the grand prize on their Twitter account.
