Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan named to Poland’s EuroBasket 2022 roster

San Antonio Spurs rookie Jeremy Sochan was among the 16 players named to Poland’s preliminary roster for EuroBasket 2022 set to run Sept. 1-18, the team announced on Thursday.

Sochan, whose mother is Polish, first played for the junior national team in the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship. He then became the youngest to play with the senior national team in the FIBA EuroBasket qualifiers in February 2021, scoring 18 points in a win over Romania.

The national team will begin preparations for the tournament on Aug. 4 in Warsaw, Poland. They then play Ukraine and Turkey in two exhibition matches from Aug. 12-14 and will also face Croatia on Aug. 25 and Austria on Aug. 28 in the pre-qualifiers for EuroBasket 2025.

Poland was placed in Group D this year, along with hosts the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, the Netherlands and Serbia. They will begin their schedule on Sept. 2 versus the Czech Republic and then play Finland, Israel, the Netherlands and Serbia.

The four best teams from each group will advance to the next stage.

With training camp for most NBA teams beginning in late September, it is unclear how active Sochan will be with Poland. The national team will be in contact with the Spurs to develop a plan that best suits both parties as it understands the NBA takes priority.

The upcoming games will give Sochan the opportunity to get some valuable training time in after missing summer league due to the coronavirus. He has emerged as a key player for Poland and could once again see a large role with the team in Europe.
