Spring notebook: NFA earns wins in boys and girls lacrosse

Week 7 of the spring season featured a number of highlights and top performances.

The Norwich Free Academy boys lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak with a big non-league win over Prince Tech.

The Norwich Free Academy girls lacrosse team edged Ledyard in a key Eastern Connecticut Conference battle.

And the NFA boys volleyball team swept crosstown rival Norwich Tech.

Here are the highlights and top performances from Week 7:

Boys lacrosse

Logan Jenkins poured in seven goals, Gavin Jenkins added three goals, and Conor Dempsey had two goals as Norwich Free Academy rolled to a 19-1 non-league win over Prince/Cheney Tech Coop.

Cortlan Beetle, Tristan Laney, Wyatt Woodcock, Simon Loewenstein, CJ Frank, Jordan Legace and Matt Zinewicz each had one goal, while Luke Wotring made three saves for the  Wildcats (5-8).

Logan Jenkins and Dempsey had one goal apiece, while Legace added an assist in the Wildcats’ 15-2 non-league loss against RHAM.

Girls lacrosse

Molly Page scored four goals and dished out two assists as Norwich Free Academy edged Ledyard, 8-7.   Alex Tabilas (two assists), Leah Burchman, Alice Rourke, and Hayleigh Young had one goal apiece, while Sophia Smith stopped six shots for the Wildcats (8-5).

Erika Horne made seven saves, Lila Beaudreault sparked a big defensive performance with five caused turnovers, and Molly Crabtree scored five goals to lift Killingly past Montville, 15-6.

Emily Lamparelli netted four goals, Riley Ritchotte scored three goals, and Morgan Blanchard, Illyana Malarkey, and Gina Soraseun had one goal apiece for Killingly (7-4).

Sienna Caron scored two goals, while Amelia Hawkins (one assist) and Tessa Marchand each had one goal in Griswold/Norwich Tech’s, 14-4, non-league loss against Morgan.

Boys volleyball

Norwich Free Academy swept crosstown-rival Norwich Tech, 25-15, 25-21, and 25-20 behind Tyler McDermott (7 kills, 6 blocks, 7 digs), Gage Hinkley (12 kills, 4 blocks, 3 digs) and Landon Little (23 assists).

The Warriors were led by Bradley Martell (8 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs) and Emerson Avery (10 digs, 2 kills, 3 assists).

McDermott had 11 kills and Little dished out 12 assists in NFA’s 25-22, 25-18, and 25-21 loss against Glastonbury.

Bryan Contreras collected 16 digs, Keegan Johnston had 15 digs, and Hinkley added 11 assists, nine kills and five blocks in the Wildcats’ 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20 loss against South Windsor.

Boys tennis

Phill Purcell, Ross Hill, and Sai Patel rolled to straight set singles wins to lift Killingly past New London, 4-3. Colin Ericson and Deven Delaney won at No. 1 doubles for Killingly.

Girls tennis

Talia Santese, Norah Dimartino, Cassidey Card, and Abbey Danielson rolled to straight set singles wins as Killingly edged Windham, 4-3.

Killingly’s No. 1 doubles team of Malia Taylor-Robichaud and Olivia Denaker led a doubles sweep in a 5-2 win over New London. Santese and Dimartino captured singles wins.

Norwich Tech’s No. 1 and No. 2  doubles tandem of Emily Pomerleau and Zerrin Ratzer, and Aleza Lopez and Makenzie Stabach remained undefeated in the Warriors’ 5-2 win over Prince Tech.

Mila Ladua and Jarelis Acevedo gave the Warriors a doubles sweep, while Alejandra Cardona and Sophia Caballero earned wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

Boys golf

Portland edged Xavier, 312-313, to capture the championship at the annual Wildcat Invitational at Norwich Golf Course on May 6. East Catholic (327), Tolland (329), and East Lyme (333) rounded out the top five of the prestigious 15-team event.

Norwich Free Academy’s Nick Wigfield and Tyler Hollis each carded 18-hole rounds of 80 to lead the Wildcats (347) to a ninth place finish.

Killingly’s Harrison Allard shot an 85 as Killingly finished 13th with a score of 361.

Later in the week, Allard shot a 44 in Killingly’s 5.5-1.5 victory against Fitch. Trent Pichie halved his match with a 46, while winning for Killingly (5-3, 5-2 ECC) were Quin Crowley, Sebastian Sierakowski and Layne O'Leary.

Griswold’s Gennaro Lavado and Cooper Wilson each shot 40 in the Wolverines’ 7-0 loss against Wheeler.

Norwich Tech’s Jack Gahrman earned medalist honors with a 38 as the Warriors rolled to a 178-197 win against Grasso Tech at Norwich Golf Course.

Jacob Stone earned medalist honors with a 38 and Jarrett Towne shot a 42 to lead Ellis Tech (176) to a pair of wins over Goodwin Tech (179) and Vinal Tech (190) at Harrisville Golf Course in Woodstock.

Girls golf

Norwich Free Academy sophomore Caroline Goderre earned medalist honors with a 44 at the annual Wildcat Invitational at Norwich Golf Course. Mackenzie Pothier shot a team best 46 for Killingly, followed by NFA’s Erin O’Farrell, who carded a 49.
