Spring notebook: NFA boys lacrosse stuns Woodstock with late goal

Week 5 of the spring season featured a number of highlights and top performances.

The Norwich Free Academy softball team earned impressive wins over Waterford and Glastonbury and gained some votes in this week's GameTimeCT Top 10 poll.

The Norwich Free Academy boys volleyball team rolled to three sweeps, and fifth straight overall, while improving to 11-1.

The Griswold softball team captured three wins in three days and improved to 8-2.

And the Norwich Free Academy boys lacrosse team upended Woodstock Academy on a goal from Gavin Jenkins with just two seconds left in regulation.

Here are the highlights and top performances from Week 5:

Baseball

Dan St. George allowed just five hits while striking out six to earn a complete game win and lead Norwich Free Academy to an 8-1 victory over St. Bernard at Dickenman Field. Jonas Tiburcio and Conner Caulfield each had two hits for the Wildcats (5-3).

Sam Gilgenbach went 3-for-3 and Kyami Boyce also added three hits as host Griswold held off Stonington, 9-7.  Calvin Oddo had a two-run single and KinKade Rubino laced a two-run triple to power the Wolverines to an 8-0 lead.

Andrew Hardin had two hits for Griswold.

Hardin scattered eight hits, allowed just one earned run, and struck out five over seven innings in Griswold’s 8-4 win over Plainfield. Oddo (two RBIs) and Boyce each had two hits for the Wolverines.

Bray and Keyan Mayernik had two hits apiece for the Panthers.

Tony Navan (two RBIs) and Mayernik each had two hits in Plainfield’s 14-3 loss against Montville.

Boyce, Gilgenbach, and Rubino each had one hit in Griswold’s 2-1 loss against Montville.

Ashton Goodwin and Brady Zadora each had two hits, while Dominik Kubera pitched 5.2 innings allowing only two earned runs and striking out four for Killingly in a 4-3 loss against Wheeler at Dodd Stadium.

Michael Fabiano Jr. went 2-for-2 at the plate while throwing three innings and allowing only one run in Killingly’s 13-3 win over Ledyard.

Brady Zadora, Mason Frazer, and Hayden Larrow each had two hits for Killingly.

Softball

Hailey Smith allowed just two earned runs while striking out six to lift Norwich Free Academy to a 7-2 victory against Waterford. Aubrey Martin, Melina Graziano (two RBIs), and Ava Boenig each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Graziano had two hits, including a double, and an RBI in NFA’s 7-1 loss to Coventry.

Dakota Bourdon struck out eight over seven innings and also had a pair of doubles at the plate to lead NFA past Lyman Memorial. Autumn Romains had two hits, including a double, Chloe Green had two hits and two RBIs, and Brooke Stringer had two hits and an RBI for the Wildcats (7-4).

Smith allowed just one run with four strikeouts in NFA’s 2-1 win over Glastonbury. Graziano had two key hits and two RBIs, while Madison Waltke had a hit and a run scored for the Wildcats.

Winning pitcher Maya Stimson also had two hits and two runs scored as Norwich Tech rolled past CTC rival Ellis Tech, 16-2, in a six-inning mercy rule contest. Autumn Hanks powered the Warriors’ offense with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.

Diana Kozerefski had two hits and three RBIs, while Morgan Cook had a hit and scored four runs for the Warriors.

Kylie Damble and Rose Lopez each had two hits for the Golden Eagles.

Hanks drove in the only run for Norwich Tech (2-8) in a 13-1 non-league loss against Woodstock Academy.

Laurissa Gedney went 4-for-4 with two doubles and seven RBIs and Brionna Frappier had three hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs to power Plainfield to a 16-4 non-league win over Ellis Tech. Gillian Brix and Serenity Evans each had two hits for the Panthers.

Camryn Murray had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for the Golden Eagles.

Murray went 3-for-3 with five RBIs in Ellis Tech’s 24-6 CTC win over Prince Tech. Hailey Haggett had a home run and five RBIs, Liz Ploof had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs, and Damble went 4-for-4 for the Golden Eagles.

Danielle Veillette and Grace Deslauriers combined for eight strikeouts as Killingly topped Putnam, 15-1.  Veillette and Atila Dos Santos led the offensive charge with a combined four hits and four RBIs for Killingly (5-3).

Samantha Baker pitched five innings allowing only three earned runs while striking out three but Killingly fell short against Waterford, 5-0. Grace Deslauriers and Izzy Robbins each reached on a walk and a hit for Killingly.

Abby Matheson picked up her third win in three days, combining with Madison Labrecque to throw a five-hitter while striking out nine, as Griswold topped Plainfield, 9-5, in an ECC Division 3 battle. Matheson (two RBIs) and Kierra Neilson (two runs) each had three hits for the Wolverines (8-2, 3-1).

Brianna Frappier had a three-run triple in the bottom of the seventh for the Panthers.

Elaina Conrad had two hits for Griswold in a 10-1 loss against Wheeler.

Boys lacrosse

Gavin Jenkins scored the game-winning goal with only two seconds remaining to lift Norwich Free Academy to a thrilling 10-9 victory over Woodstock Academy.

The Centaurs (3-4, 0-4) led 9-7 with 2:30 left to play after Jared Nielsen scored his third goal of the game. But Logan Jenkins scored his sixth goal of the game for the Wildcats a minute later to cut the deficit to one. Cortlan Beetle tied it with 20 seconds left in regulation and Gavin Jenkins (two goals) won it with a score just prior to the final horn.

Logan Jenkins scored four goals and Gavin Jenkins added three goals and one assist but NFA fell short against St. Bernard, 17-11. Beetle had two goals, Conor Dempsey had 1 goal and three assists, and Wyatt Woodcock added a goal for the Wildcats (4-6, 3-3).

Girls lacrosse

Molly Page scored seven goals and dished out two assists and Alice Rourke collected three goals and three assists to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 16-4 non-league win over Windsor.

Hayleigh Young and Leah Burchman each had two goals, while Sophia Smith made four saves for the Wildcats.

Rourke and Page each had five goals in NFA’s 17-2 win over Griswold/Norwich Tech. Sienna Caron and Brooke Valentine scored one goal piece for the Wolverines.

Page had the only goal in the Wildcats’ 10-1 loss against Fitch.

Molly Crabtree scored five goals as Killingly rallied past Griswold/Norwich Tech, 14-13. Emily Lamparelli collected three goals and three assists, Morgan Blanchard added two goals, and Erika Horne made five saves for Killingly.

Lilah Dunn, Illy Malarkey, and Riley Ritchotte each had one goal for Killingly, which overcame an 8-2 deficit.

Sienna Caron scored a game-high six goals, Kaylin Stockwell scored three goals, and Alexis Emanuele finished with 14 saves for the Wolverines.

Horne made seven saves as Killingly earned its first shutout in program history with a 14-0 win over Woodstock Academy. Crabtree paced Killingly (5-3) with four goals, Blanchard added three goals, and

Riley Ritchotte had two goals and three assists in the win over the Centaurs (0-9).

Boys track and field

Griswold topped Wheeler, 104-36, and Montville, 77-72.

The Wolverines got individual first place performances from Tycen LaBelle (800, 2:05), Sean Silva (1600, 5:03.6), Xzavier De LaRosa (3200, 12:24), Matt Perea (discus, 125-11),

Luke Cassidy (javelin, 136-3), and Josh Turner (triple jump, 35-9).

Jeremiah Smith remained unbeaten in every event this season by winning the high jump, long lump, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles in Killingly’s meet against Plainfield.

Killingly’s Everton Brown also continued his dominance, finishing first in the 100 meter dash.

Girls track and field

Griswold defeated Wheeler, 89-42, but fell to Montville, 107-38.

Madison Pudvah won both the discus (70-2) and the javelin (82-2), while Ryley Hubert was second in the 1600 (6:29.1) and Emily McDonough finished second in the 100 (13.9) for the Wolverines.

Killingly’s Sydney Mullen won the 3200 in a meet against Plainfield.  Jenna DiFusco won the javelin, while Emma Miller took first in pole vault for Killingly.

Boys volleyball

Gage Hinkley (10 kills), Bryan Contreras (13 digs) and Alec Ferland (17 assists) powered Norwich Free Academy to a 25-13, 25-14, and 25-19 sweep over HMTCA.

The Wildcats also swept Woodstock Academy, 25-14, 25-15, and 25-19 behind Hinkley (12 kills 13 digs), Tyler McDermott (nine kills) and Contreras (14 digs).

Keegan Johnston had seven kills, Ferland collected 11 assists and seven aces, and Hinkley added six kills and six aces in NFA’s 25-8, 25-10, and 25-20 sweep over Academy of Aerospace & Engineering.

Bradley Martell had 11 kills and nine digs, while Emerson Avery collected 11 assists, 10 digs, and three kills to lead Norwich Tech past Putnam, 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, and 25-19.

Mason Matthews added 16 digs and six kills for the Warriors (4-5, 4-4 CVL).

Norwich Tech (5-5, 5-4 CVL) swept Capital Prep, 25-6, 25-6, 25-9 behind Martell (nine kills), Landon O’Brien (nine aces), and Matthews (nine aces).

Boys tennis

Deven Delaney and Colin Ericson won at No. 2 doubles for Killingly in a 6-1 loss against Montville. Delaney and Ericson also won a pro set game, while Phillip Purcell also won a p;ro set game for Killingly.

Lidwrig Jacquet and Luis Ruiz-Perez posted the only win for Norwich Free Academy at No. 3 doubles in a 6-1 loss against Woodstock Academy.

Girls tennis

Malia Taylor-Robichaud and Olivia Denaker won at No. 1 doubles, while Norah Dimartino and Cassidey Card won at No. 2 doubles for Killingly in a 5-2 loss against Ledyard.

Alyssa Mikolajzcak, Amaris Moreno, Alejandra Cardona, and Sophia Caballero swept the singles matches to lift Norwich Tech (3-1, 3-0 CTC) to a 6-1 win over Grasso Tech.

Norah Dimartino, Cassidey Card, and Eliana Keomanivong rolled to straight set singles wins to Killingly past Norwich Free Academy. Leeya Fabry earned a win at No. 1 shingles for NFA.

Boys golf

Killingly improved to 3-1 (3-0 ECC) with a 7-0 win over Plainfield at Foster Country Club (R.I.). Layne O’Leary earned medalist honors with a score of 40 to pace Killingly. Harrison Allard shot 41 which contributed to the 172 team total.

Colin Williams led the way for the Panthers with a score of 44.

Allard was the medalist with a 38 in Killingly’s 172-190 win over Stonington. Trent Pichie shot a 43, while Sebastian Sierakowski shot 44 for

Jacob Stone earned medalist honors with a 38 as Ellis Tech defeated Windham Tech, 165-230. Jarrett  Towne shot 40, while Keegan Lyons shot 42 for the Golden Eagles.

Norwich Tech’s Jake Gahrman earned medalist honors with a 42 but the Warriors fell short against Ellis Tech, 190-192.

Marcelo Raposo posted a 41 to earn medalist honors, while Tyler Hollis carded a 43 to lift Norwich Free Academy (4-0, 2-0) past Woodstock Academy, 5-2, at the Quinnatisset Country Club.

Girls golf

Caroline Godere earned medalist honors with a 43 as Norwich Free Academy defeated Bacon Academy, 197-222. Erin O'Farrell shot a 45 for the Wildcats

.O’Farrell was the medalist with a 46 in NFA’s 202-230 win over East Lyme at Old Lyme Country Club.  Goderre shot a 47 for the Wildcats.
