Sports Illustrated predicts 5,000-yard season for Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence came up just a few hundred passing yards short of a Jacksonville Jaguars franchise record in 2022. Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated thinks the 23-year-old quarterback will soar past that mark and then some in 2023.

In a post with 100 predictions for the upcoming season, Orr wrote that Lawrence will become the tenth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season.

Lawrence continues to “get it” at such a substantial speed, and, while the Jaguars’ running game suffered a bit from some stretches of pedestrian play last year, it was all the more reason for Doug Pederson to seriously consider an offense that almost never takes the ball out of Lawrence’s hands. Potentially generational QB, great wide receivers … what’s so hard about that?

The only quarterbacks to ever top 5,000 passing yards in a season are Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Ben Roethlisberger, Jameis Winston, Dan Marino, Matthew Stafford, and Justin Herbert.

Lawrence finished last season with 4,113 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The Jaguars’ franchise record for passing yards currently belongs to Blake Bortles, who threw for 4,428 during the 2015 season.

Orr also predicted that Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk, who had 84 receptions for 1,108 yards last year, will reach 100 receptions in his second season with the team.
