Sporting KC to play Toluca FC, Chicago Fire in Leagues Cup 2024

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Sporting Kansas City has their two opponents for the group stage of Leagues Cup 2024.

Sporting will be in Group Four of the West Region with 10-time Liga MX champions Deportivo Toluca FC and fellow MLS side Chicago Fire FC for the month-long tournament from July 26 to Aug. 25.

All three teams in Sporting Kansas City’s group advanced to the Knockout Stage of last year’s tournament; Toluca won Group 4 in the Central Region and Chicago Fire finished first in Group 2 in the Central Region.

Toluca then knocked SKC out of the tournament last season in the Round of 32 by a score of 4-1 at Children’s Mercy Park.

This season’s League Cup introduces a new tiered format and ranking system based on combined MLS and Liga MX club performance, using points in the last 34 regular season matches.

MLS teams are ranked based on the 2023 MLS Supporters’ Shield standings, while Liga MX clubs are ranked based on the cumulative 34 matches in the 2023 Clausura and Apertura tournaments.

All clubs, except for the two league winners, are divided into three tiers based on the Leagues Cup ranking (1-15, 16-30, 31-45).

Here is how these three teams are ranked:

  • No. 9 Deportivo Toluca FC (LIGA MX)

  • No. 22 Sporting Kansas City (MLS)

  • No. 34 Chicago Fire FC (MLS)

All 15 groups have a team from each tier for competitive and geographical balance.

The 47-team tournament that features all 47 MLS and Liga MX clubs ends with the top three finishers qualifying for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
