Spartans Headlines: MSU football hires new Executive Director of Player Personnel and Director of Recruiting on Monday

There’s never a quiet day in the world of Michigan State sports. That was again the case on Monday, with the Spartans announcing the hiring of a new football staffer.

Mark Diethorn was tabbed as the Executive Director of Player Personnel and Director of Recruiting for Michigan State football. He comes to the Spartans after working at Virginia Tech in a similar role from 2018 – 2021.

It’s been a busy few days for Michigan State football. All of the transfer departures news took over Sunday’s headlines, but on Monday Michigan State made a big announcement in the hiring of Mark Diethorn as the newest member of Mel Tucker’s coaching and support staff.

Diethorn will serve as the Executive Director of Player Personnel and Director of Recruiting.

Spartans offer Grand Valley State wide receiver

The Spartans lost one of their top wide receivers to the transfer portal on Sunday, and will look to help fill that gap through adding someone via the portal. That attempt started on Monday with Michigan State offering Grand Valley State wide receiver Jahdae Walker.

Walker led the Lakers in receiving last year, and has picked up interest from other big name programs at the Division I level. Texas A&M, Pitt and Illinois are a few other programs to extend him an offer.

Former MSU CB Charles Brantley picks up offers from Colorado, OU

Speaking of the transfer portal, former Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley is already getting attention from some notable programs. Brantley has already received offers from Colorado and Oklahoma since he officially entered the transfer portal on Sunday.

Spartans offer under-the-radar RB from Philly

Michigan State is looking to snag an under-the-radar prospect from the city of brotherly love. The Spartans extended a scholarship offer to 2025 running back prospect Isaiah West on Monday afternoon.

West is yet to be ranked on 247Sports, but has picked up interest from a handful of big-time schools, including Penn State, West Virginia and Boston College.

MSU offers 3-star safety from Ohio

Michigan State extended a scholarship offer to three-star safety Reggie Powers of Dayton, Ohio on Monday afternoon. Powers ranks as the No. 56 safety in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2024 class.

Powers also holds offers from Ohio State, Pitt, Cincinnati, Northwestern and West Virginia. He is currently projected to commit to the Buckeyes, according to 247Sports.

ESPN FPI projects winning record for MSU in 2023

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) was updated last week and it looks at the Spartans pretty highly at the moment.

The FPI projects the Spartans to go 7-5 next year, and get off to a particularly hot start early in the season. That, of course, was before the handful of key Spartans hit the transfer portal on Sunday — but still interesting to see.

Draymond Green, Warriors open series against Lakers on Tuesday

Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors will return to the floor on Tuesday night in Game One of a second round NBA Playoffs matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tip off is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on TNT.
