Southern tennis scores double sweep

Sep. 21—Scotland was late starting its women's tennis season for 2023, and the Scots are still making up for lost time. On Tuesday, that took the form of a doubleheader with Southern Lee when the Lady Cavaliers came to town.

Scotland has just four players, so the outcome of the match was a nearly-guaranteed two wins for Southern, unless the hosts could win almost every contested match. This wasn't about to happen, as Southern (4-2, 4-1 Sandhills Athletic Conference) won both matches. The first was a 6-0 sweep, or 9-0 if defaults are counted, and in the nightcap, only singles matches were played and the Lady Cavs put their Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 7 singles players out, taking three of the four matches.

In the first match, Kate Jackson beat Maliah Locklear 8-3, Evie Eller blanked Rhea Trusdell 8-0, Blaire Young did the same to Shay Ward, and CE Bryan downed Marissa Smith 8-1. Logan Hickman and Gina DeCerbo, playing 5 and 6 for Southern in singles, got walkovers.

In doubles, both matches were played to six games, and both were shutouts. Bryan and Eller beat Locklear and Trusdell, and Logan Hickman and Brooke Burrus downed Ward and Smith. The No. 3 doubles was a walkover for the Lady Cavs.

The matchups for the second team match was different. Again, No. 5 and 6 singles were defaulted. Young beat Locklear 6-3, Hickman topped Trusdell 6-2, DeCerbo blanked Ward 6-0, and in the only win Scotland had, Smith beat Gabby Petty 6-1.
